Updated

Welcome to what is the first edition of SOTA quarterly news - first edition only in one respect in that it is the first quarterly, whereas previously there was a monthly news. After several monthly news editors sequentially decided to retire, the monthly news split into New Asssociations and Awards.
What were missing were many of the general news items written by quite a number of contributers across the globe about various unrelated topics that they thought were of interest to the SOTA
comuninity - and they were. I got into discussion with Tom M1EYP and Andy MM0FMF about this shortfall and decided to volunteer to try to compile a SOTA general news that could encompass such general (any thing of interest) contributions and publish that as a SOTA News at some interval. We decided that should be quarterly - one reason at least being the work load that the monthly news generated - heavy.- and I needed to look for process improvements.

OK so quarterly spreads the task out, but I needed to ensure that the task was manageable so it dawned on me that I could create a category in the reflector (News Editors) and then enroll contributors into the group New Editors and allow them to generate their contributions with dialogue and pictures exactly as they wanted them to appear. No need to submit text and photos directly to a compiling author - they can create exactly what they want, effectively off-line from the main reflector flow. After that it is up to me to compile those into a single SOTA news post - no reformatting.- exactly as they submitted. And guess what?? - that process actually works except that I still have to refine the compilation process to optimize it.

This quarters news is a little bit thin of contributions so far but the good news is that 5 previous regular contributors have agreed to become members of this group - News Editors - and more will be welcome - so I am expecting to have more content for the July 2019 news… I have sent many PMs that have drawn no response, nothing from the west side of the Atlantic nor ‘down under’.

My thanks to Allan GW4VPX, Paulo CT2IWW, Don G0NES and Guru EA2IF who have contributed to this News.

Just thought I would share some reflector statistics for the month of March 2019 to give you some idea of the activity.

This reflector software produces and amazing number of reports, 42 in total of which this is just a glimpse…

Activating With Hand Held Radios
There has been quite some discussion on the reflector recently about using VHF or UHF using hand held radios. Don G0NES reminds activators looking for contacts in this way that holding a hand held side ways on so that the antenna is horizontal may increase your chance of picking up a contact. Many home based chasers have horizontally polarized beams and some may not be able to hear you with the antenna vertical. So if you are using a hand held and struggling for that final contact to qualify, maybe going horizontal with a bit of directional rotation might just bring that contact you need.

Radio Tales from Wales by Allan GW4VPX

Winter bonus heralded an increase in SOTA activity on the hills and mountains of Wales. Indeed, there were times last month when as many as 8 summits were being activated at the same time and some frantic Summit to Summit calls were being made from North to South Wales on VHF. Sadly, once again we have been hit by some severe storms which have brought with them prolonged periods of wind and rain with flooding in many towns and villages in my locality curtailing many activation opportunities. Nevertheless, some of the stalwarts of SOTA have been out adding winter bonus points to their already impressive activation scores. Rod M0JLA and Viki M6BWA (Hereford City) continued to hop over the border and activate the popular summits in the Brecon Beacons (GW/SW) and making sure they popped up to North Wales for a few of the big ones. VHF enthusiast Adrian G4AZS continues to pop up unexpectedly on our Welsh mountains using HF these days so thanks for that New Year resolution Adrian. We have a few new Mountain Goats with John MW0XOT hitting the 1000 on The Begwns GW/MW-025 and John G(W)4TQE crossing the border and the MG threshold with a visit to Waun Fach GW/SW-002 (8 points)…congratulations to you both .

John G(W)4TQE/p heading for Mountain Goat on a cold GW/MW-011 in January with Allan GW4VPX

On the extreme side of SOTA, Andrew M1CJE (Wiltshire) ( http://blog.m1cje.uk/ ) has been activating in some harsh weather conditions in Wales during the last few months and will probably see his Mountain Goat trophy being collected during the next Winter Bonus session?…good luck Andrew.

Andrew is usually accompanied by Richard M1HAX and Pete M6XPE (Andrew’s son). Jordan M3TMX (Erdington) is another who is quietly amassing a large number of points and is a regular visitor to the mountains of Wales. Another faithful visitor is Meg the Border collie who drags owner Mike G7HEM (Stourbridge) on to the Welsh summits.

Meg and Mike collecting Winter Bonus points on Cadair Berwyn GW/NW-012

Mike is close to Mountain Goat so 2019 should be the year. It was a pleasure a few weeks ago to have a joint activation with SOTA fanatic Paul M0PLA from Telford who has recovered from an illness to once again chase Winter Bonus points on the mountains of Wales…just couldn’t keep up with him hi. Regular visitors to the Brecon Beacons are Philip G4HQB and Gillian M6OVW from Ludlow along with Bill G4WSB and Debbie M6BYW from Wiltshire. Since getting his Intermediate license in November Roger 2E0RYR (Leominster) has been steadily collecting activation points by visiting South Wales…well done and keep going.

It’s nice to know that our local activators including myself are still plodding the hills and mountains with Mountain Goat Mal GW6OVD guiding Ian 2W0IWM around the summits of South Wales.

Mountain Goat Mal GW6OVD on a cold but busy Pen y Fan GW/SW-001

Emyr MW0VPS is appearing more often and nice to hear newcomer Derek 2W0FLW giving us some points from South Wales. Our local and not so local chasers continue to support us so a big thanks to them also.

Information on routes to our summits in Wales continues to evolve and the SOTA Mapping project is an useful first port of call. I don’t think that there are many summits left without a published route and GPS track now. Simon G4TJC continues to find new routes in North Wales with historical links and they can be found on his blog http://g4tjc.blogspot.com/, Allan GW4VPX continues to add reports and routes to ‘Radio Tales from West Wales and beyond…’ https://gw4vpx.blogspot.com/ , a wealth of information from Phil G4OBK http://catterblog.blogspot.com/ and likewise Tom M1EYP http://tomread.co.uk/ (click on his link to SOTA on his website)

DIA NACIONAL SOTA / SOTA-PORTUGAL DAY

Dozens of activators are expected to “head for the hills” next Saturday, the 6th, to participate on the yearly SOTA Portugal Day.

Besides the “traditional” HF activations, there is a growing number of DMR ops that are planning to attend, operating their digital UHF transceivers in simplex mode.

This is not a contest but rather a gathering of enthusiasts of this very popular program amongst amateur radio operators. Therefore, all hams around the world are invited to participate, with no exceptions.

Amateur radio operators who are activators are particularly encouraged to bring other hams or prospective hams to the activation, thus enabling them to experience the Summits on The Air program.

When and how:

  • From 09.00 and 18.30 (local time) on April 6th 2019;
  • Using own call sign (/ p);
  • Using the simplest possible equipment (QRP in most cases, including portable radios V / UHF);
  • In SOTA summits with the highest possible score:
  • In the amateur’s radio operator area or any CT/CU/CT3 summit.

PDF certificates will be awarded the participants who activate a summit (by SOTA rules) or have a QSO with one activator/summit on that day (chasers or SWL). To apply, one must send photos or videos of their SOTA activity to diasotaCT@gmail.com

SOTA-PORTUGAL yearly meeting on May 11th-12th

The enrollement period to attend SOTA-Portugal´s yearly meeting next May is open now. According to Pedro - CT1DBS, the number of registrations so far is “encouraging” and he hopes to have a full house by the time the event starts.

The program includes a series of presentations regarding Summits of the Air ativities in Portugal, namely a review the progam´s statistics, rules, equipment and hands-on tutorials on safety and operating procedures. On Sunday, the meeting will take to local summits for a group activation and lunch.

The event will take place in the city of Santarém with support from Santarém Municipality (Câmara Municipal de Santarém) and the Associação de Radioamadores do Ribatejo (ARR) club.

NUNO GOMES - CT2HOV activated all CT/TM references in 2018

Congrats to Nuno Gomes - CT2HOV for the activation of all Trás-os-Montes SOTA references (CT/TM) in the year of 2018. Those who followed his activities (and the few who kept him company) are witness to what seemed sometimes a marathon of summit hopping, from early morning to late at night. In some of those weekend forays, he had the support of local fire stations, who offered overnight shelter. With this tour, all of CT/TM references have been activated at least once. Nuno is now aiming at CT/BA for 2019, so keep an ear out for him.

From Guru EA2IF

From my APRIL-2019 news in Spanish

SOTA activators and activations carried out in Spain and the Spanish-American Countries in March-2019:

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in Spain in March 2019.

EA2 leads this month in number of activations, followed by EA1, EA8, EA6, EA3, EA5, EA7 and EA4. We haven’t got any activations from EA9.

We’ve got a very good number of activations, well over last year’s monthly average .

This is the graph of the number of activations per month in 2019 and the averaged montly activations number in 2018.

Here’s the graph for the chasers and number of chases:

We have again Manuel EA2DT as the most remarkable chaser in Spain by far with nearly seven hundred chases!!!, which I find just awesome. Last month I wrote “No wonder why Manuel is currently the #7 chaser in the World” and I see now that he’s not only #6 now but he is just 29 points behind #5. Absolutely amazing Manuel’s devotion and dedication to SOTA chasing!

This the graph for the monthly chases in Spain in 2019.

As you can see, the increase in number of chases is very impressive!

================================================

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in the Spanish speaking American Countries with existing SOTA associations in March 2019.

We see this month 1 activation in CX Uruguay, 3 activations in LU Argentina and 3 in TI Costa Rica. This represents a significant increase with respect to the previous months, which is just great. We would love seeing some reports with pictures of some of these activations in the SOTA Reflector.

This is the graph of the number of activations per month in 2019 and the averaged monthly activations number in 2018.

See the trend. Isn’t this beautiful?

Regarding the chasing activity, as in the previous month, there has been one single chase uploaded in the database this March too. This is the graph:

Just one single chase in TI Costa Rica.

This the graph for the monthly chases in the Spanish speaking American Countries with existing SOTA associations in March 2019.

According to the number of activations, I think there should be more chasers in these countries but, for some reason, they have not yet loaded their QSOs to the database, so there’s no way for us to know.

As a final comment, I’m delighted with the increase of activating we see in both sides of “El Charco” (The Pond), as well as with the huge increase of chasing in EA Spain.

SOTA Portugal Day(s) a smashing success

Despite adverse weather conditions that led to an extension from the initial date, over 21 Portuguese Summits on The Air references were activated on April, 13th. Close to 40 activators and hundreds of chasers participated in the event that observed the 8th anniversary of the implementation of the SOTA program in Portugal.

Many summit to summit (s2s) contacts were made, in all bands, from HF to SHF, both in analog and digital modes. In particular, it was good to see the participation of the Grupo DMR Portugal and an increase in the numbers of Portuguese stations operating on the 60 meter band.

A participation diploma (PDF, sent via email) is available from the organization for both chasers and activators. To apply, one has to simply have their contacts registered in the SOTA Database and send a photograph of their activities to the organization´s email, at diasotaCT@gmail.com.

Full house for the SOTA Portugal annual meeting

According to Pedro, CT1DBS, the registration count for the meet that will take place on May, 11th is very close to the room´s capacity. Even though the enrollment period is still on till the 3rd, some late requests might have to be denied.

The program includes a series of presentations regarding Summits of the Air activities in Portugal, namely a review the program´s statistics, rules, equipment and hands-on tutorials on safety and operating procedures. On Sunday, 12th the meeting will take to local summits for a group activation and lunch.

The event will take place in the city of Santarém with support from the Santarém Municipality (Câmara Municipal de Santarém), the Associação de Radioamadores do Ribatejo (ARR) club and Santarém´s Municipal Fire Brigade.

Just three topics this month:

PLEASE , when claiming an Award, the Qualification Date is what it says NOT the date you applied for the Award (unless you made it that day). I do my best to correct incorrect dates but I am not always successful.

When you place an order please pay for it. We take Paypal, Bank Transfer or, if you must, Cash. Paypal is easiest, you do not need an account just a credit or debit card. I have had to issue Paypal invoices which is time consuming usually involving multiple emails.

I now have a wide range of SOTA T-shirts in stock again. Please make my xyl happy and help clear this stock from our spare bedroom where it takes up a lot of space

Welcome to the July 2019 edition of the SOTA Quarterly News.

A few more contributions this quarter than the last so I hope that this continues to build over the next couple of quarters. My thanks got to CT2IWW, DG7ACF, EA2IF, GW4VPX, G4OBK, GM4TOE, K2JB, M0NOM, MM0FMF ON7DQ. ( have I missed anyone?) for their contributions to this quarterly news. We’ll start with the awards news from Barry GM4TOE

SOTA Awards May & June 2019

There were very few Award claims in May so I have decided to combine the statistics for May and June

Congratulations to all who made Mountain Goat (1000 Activator points) and Shack Sloth (1000 Chaser points); all are listed below. K9IR and JA1VVH are new “Supersloths” and have received our variant on the standard certificate for this award. Special mention to DF3MC who must have been using his air miles to achieve the “Globetrotter” Mountain Explorer award; many of us would like the chance to activate on so many continents so well done to Martin.

It is interesting to note that the Microwave Award, which was introduced in collaboration with the UK Microwave Group to encourage portable operation on bands above 1000 MHz, has generally been awarded to Activators and Chasers outwith the UK. There is a lot of SOTA UK activity on the higher bands (especially 13 cm) so why no claims?

Not a lot to extra to report this month. My xyl has managed to find a home for all the T-shirt stock and spent many hours bagging and sorting them – guess I owe her a glass of wine!

My trophy stock has been decimated, more are on order but there will be a delay of about 4 weeks before I can produce any more Mountain Goat trophies. I also realised that my hat stock is missing a couple of popular colours so I will have to order more of those too – goodness knows where this extra stock will be stored!

Finally my sincere thanks to all those folk who have made a donation towards SOTA funds. Andy MM0FMF highlighted at the Friedrichshaven Rally the costs involved in running the free-to-use SOTA IT facilities and it is the sale of Awards and merchandise (plus these generous donations) that provide these funds

From Phil Catterall G4OBK:
The complete adventures of Victor GI4ONL and I in the Czech Republic last month can now be found on my blog for May 2019. We activated 52 summits in 8 days, made 1180 SOTA contacts and drove 960 miles.

It was hard to write about something of interest every on every summit as many summits in the Czech Republic are in woodland and are easy to reach from the car, but I managed to flesh out my blog somewhat, interspersed with the occasional unusual occurrence and discovery such as:

  • The stag party thieves on the flight out to Prague
  • A description of the hotels where we stayed and one of the bars where we ate
  • Coming across 3 contest club stations sited on the tops of summits – off which 2 were in the middle of a VHF Contest
  • Finding a hotel on top of OK/VY-010 Kremesnik a 6 point summit – a future place for activators to stay I wondered?
  • Discovering that the Czech Republic has a similar situation to the old G/DC-004 Hensbarrow Beacon (Now G/DC-008) on OK/PA-040 Ochoz by way of an enormous rubbish heap that is higher than the stated summit
  • Meeting up with Jarek SP9MA on the summit of OK/PA-036 Zubri
  • Finding a cemetery on the summit of Chotuc OK/ST-097 and producing a YouTube video of us walking around it.

So please visit my blog at https://catterblog.blogspot.com/2019/05/ . I hope you find it of interest!

Postscript from Phil.
I will be operating from time to time next week when I am on holiday in France from Sunday 7th July until Friday 19th July. It’s a holiday rather than a full blown SOTA Tour but I expect to be QRV from at least one summit most days from the FL/NO area whilst travelling through it, and from the FL/VO Alsace area whilst walking between Monday 8th and Weds 17th July. On Weds/Thurs 10th/11th I will be watching the Tour de France in the Vosges / Ballon area and will try to activate a summit each day after watching the cycle race pass by, I’ve watched the Tour on TV since the 1980s so this is the first chance I have had to see it live.

From Dean Blair K2JB:

The best news those of us in the W4T/W4C Association have heard in a long time is that Liz Burns K1LIZ and husband, Ron Burns KI4TN are again activating after Liz being hospitalized for an extended amount of time enduring a STEM Cell transplant and subsequent complications that had her on life support for several weeks. Ron has been Liz’s helpmate their entire marriage as Liz was rendered completely blind from an automobile accident 30 years ago.

Photo copied from QRZ

But she is unstoppable and loves SOTA. While in the hospital her constant thoughts were, “When can we do another activation?” Those of us who know her are in awe of her ability to get to many of the summits she and Ron have activated and are in awe of Ron for guiding her all the way up and down to them. Since April, she has activated 10 summits.

From Allan GW4VPX

Radio Tales from Wales

It’s been rather a quiet few months here in Wales due to some more really bad storms passing through again although we have had some glorious weather as well so we can’t really complain.

There have been some GW related achievements during the last few months. Neil G0WPO who is a regular SOTA visitor to Wales and first started his Mountain Goat campaign on Cyrn y Brain, GW/NW-043 recently achieved his MG on Stoney Cove Pike, G/LD-018, so a well deserved congratulations Neil.

Completing the activations of all the summits in Wales is another challenge which is on my agenda for the next couple of years. Tom M1EYP and Jimmy M0HGY are well on their way by recently completing GW/NW, so well done both.

John G4TQE not only achieved Mountain Goat a few months ago but then went on quietly to complete the activation of all the summits in Wales by activating Cefn yr Ystrad GW/SW-008 on the 7th of May…what’s next John?

A happy John G4TQE/p after his MG activation and ‘Completing all of Wales’ already on his mind

Rod M0JLA and Viki M6BWA jumped on the ‘SOTA complete’ band wagon and decided to have a change of scenery from the hills and mountains of Wales by taking a ferry and completing the activation of GI…well done both.

Phil G4OBK is still plodding away at completing Wales and was up on Pen y Garn GW/MW-004 on the 5th of June. Bryn GW4ZHI and I were mobile together so obviously we had to answer is CQ SOTA call with 5/9 each way and helping him to qualify the summit. Bryn has persuaded me to join him on a joint activation on the Backpackers contest in August and to that end we are building a portable 2m beam antenna, needless to say we will be on a SOTA summit with other bands possible…

Recently I took part in the Lake District SOTA weekend organised by Mark M0NOM and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience with loads of contacts and Summit to Summits on the Saturday. I had the opportunity to do a few enjoyable joint activations on the Sunday with Paul HB9DST so thank you Paul for the company.

Paul HB9DST/p on Top o’Selside G/LD-048

The weekend also enabled me to get within 7 points of my 5000 point s2s challenge and the final sticker on the SOTA certificate. Needless to say I was out the next day on GW/MW-029 Hafod Ithel to get the sticker.

Allan GW4VPX Hafod Ithel GW/MW-029

I mentioned some of the bad weather we have been having recently and this affected a couple of our regular visitors who are trying to reach MG. Andrew M1CJE (Wiltshire) had to curtail his joint activations in North Wales due to stormy conditions and you can read all about his weekend and other activations on his Blog http://blog.m1cje.uk/

On the 2nd of June Jordan M3TMX (Erdington) sounded to me on 2m as if he was having a tough time in the wind and the rain on an exposed Moel Cynghorion GW/NW-030, nevertheless Jordan after a recent visit to the Lake District is now on 833 activation points…nearly there.

A wet but smiling Jordan on Moel Cynghorion GW/NW-030

Jordan couldn’t resist a selfie with his Auntie on Moel Siabod GW/NW-010

If you are venturing on to the hills and mountains of Wales please send me a brief report and especially some pictures of your activation so that I can include them here.

Useful Blogs and SOTA Mapping
Like a few others I’m a little behind with my blog reports, nevertheless the blogs still contain valuable information if you are intending to activate a summit. Information on routes to our summits in Wales continue to evolve and the SOTA Mapping is an useful first port of call. I don’t think that there are many summits left without a published route and GPS track now. Simon G4TJC continues to find new routes in North Wales with historical links and they can be found on his blog http://g4tjc.blogspot.com/, Allan GW4VPX continues to add reports and routes to ‘Radio Tales from West Wales and beyond…’ [https://gw4vpx.blogspot.com/ ] , a wealth of information from Phil G4OBK http://catterblog.blogspot.com/ and likewise Tom M1EYP [http://tomread.co.uk/] (click on his link to SOTA on his website). New addition to the list is Andrew M1CJE http://blog.m1cje.uk/

SOTA G/LD Weekend, 17th May 2019 – 19th May 2019

The Lake District SOTA weekend in May attracted 25 activators from as far afield as Switzerland and North America. Fortunately, the somewhat sketchy weather forecast improved during the week with a dry long weekend. The keen started on Friday with most activity on Saturday with the fit and able carrying on into Sunday. I’d like to firstly say a very warm thank you to all the chasers who persevered for contacts amongst the S2S melee!

The author M0NOM/P with fellow activator Paul M0SNA/P at the summit of Helvellyn

The statistics make great reading. Over the weekend 29 unique LD summits were activated, with 33 in total. There were 192 Summit-to-Summit contacts within the Lake District and 40 outside the region. Amongst the usual mixture of VHF and HF bands there were also contacts made on 10 Mhz, 1.24 Ghz and 2.3 Ghz with a mixture of CW, SSB and FM modes.

G4VPX/P - Allen’s station on Claife Heights

On Saturday Allan, GW4VPX/P stayed put on Claife Heights and managed to work most of the Lake District activators out that day – ending the weekend with a total of 46 S2S contacts. On other days Allan jointly activated several summits with Paul M/HB9DST/P, the weekends’ results pushing his S2S tally to within 7 points of 5000 (Platinum) – achieved few days later. Allan has the honour of becoming the first in the UK to reach this milestone.

Chris M0KPW braved a chest infection to activate Kirkby Moor and was kept very busy being one of the first on summit. Neil G0WPO had great views from High Stile, Pete M0HQO was on Pike of Blisco with Derek 2E0MIX nearby on Hard Knott. Geoff GM4WHA took in a couple of Wainwrights but was unfortunately in the cloud on Skiddaw. Chris M0RSF was impressed with the 2M activity on Red Screes. Phil G4OBK started on Stony Cove Pike with Judy and ended up on Red Screes, Andrew G4VFL activated Harter Fell (still on my list!), G6MZX was on Binsey, M0OAT wild camped overnight on Illgill Head and then moved on to Muncaster Fell the next day, G6PJZ was on Blake Fell with Di G0EVV/P close to LD land on Cross Fell G/NP-001. John G4TQE/P was on Hutton Roof Crags, Dave G3TQQ/P on Lambrigg Fell and Andy G8CPZ/P on Arnside Knott, in many cases fitting in an Activation around commitments.

Phil G4OBK/P on the descent to the Kirkstone Inn from Red Screes – after a long day!

My first SOTA activation on Saturday was with Paul W6PNG/M0SNA on Helvellyn. We arrived relatively early at 10:30 local and were amazed at the amount of activity on 2m. It was hard to find a clear frequency – a nice problem to have! At one point we had cross-traffic between two LD activators and an LD activator working into GI. I used a backpack mounted whip to try and ensure we made as many contacts as possible whilst traversing between summits, with the KX3 and SOTABEAMS Dipole for HF from both Helvellyn and Seat Sandal. We met Jamie M/N6JFD on the way back down to Dollywagon Pike - he takes the prize for furthest travelled participant and the best effort – Scafell Pike on Friday, Helvellyn on Saturday and Old Man of Coniston on Sunday (not counting his non-LD activations)! Alan M1FHM can’t have been far behind him as he also activated Helvellyn shortly after Jamie.

Jamie M/N6JFD/P with me M0NOM/P and the two Pauls G4IPB/P and M0SNA/P

A quite unique situation unfolded as Paul and I crested Seat Sandal and spied Paul G4IPB/P freshly setup for VHF and HF having completed activations on both St Sunday Crag and Fairfield. A couple of minutes later Jamie came striding straight up the side of Seat Sandal to complete our unusual group of four activators on one summit. We somewhat comically then worked Allan on Claife Heights – passing Paul’s handheld between us in quick succession. Stuart G1ZAR/P could have waved at us from Fairfield!

Andy M0FMF/P on 1.24 Ghz

Andy M0FMF/P and Paul HB9DST/P on Gummer’s How used 1.24 Ghz – there were a total of 8 Summit-to-Summits using this band, with another handful on 2.4 Ghz. Of the non-LD contacts on 2m FM MI7ACD was worked on Slieve Commedagh and MD0PCF/P on Snaefell with a handful into GW. HF activity was more limited. The furthest S2S Contact was on Sunday between M/HB9DST/P & G4VPX/P on G/LD-048 Top o’Selside and EA6/G4ONL/P on EA6/MA-049 Amoixa at 1,700 km. Phil G4OBK/P (also using a rucksack antenna) worked Gillian 2E0OVW/P on Caer Caradoc G/WB-006 as he was near the Wainwright of Dow Crag LDW-047, whilst coming down from Coniston Old Man.

Paul M/HB9DST/P with Allan G4VPX/P on Top o’Selside

On Saturday evening several the day’s activators retired to the Brookside Inn, Windermere to be fed and watered whilst comparing summit stories. It was great to put faces to callsigns and chew the cud, a rare treat indeed! One thing was agreed – we need to do this much more regularly in the future! Mark, M0NOM/P.

SOTA Portugal yearly meeting in Santarém May 11-12

Portuguese activators and chasers gathered in the city of Santarém on May 11th to attend the sixth SOTA Portugal´s yearly gathering.

The day´s proceedings were opened with a welcome speech by our host, Sílvio Leiria - CT1BPT, president of Associação de Radioamadores do Ribatejo – ARR radio club.

Pedro Carvalho – CT1DBS, Association Manager, was next with a brief presentation on SOTA rules and procedures followed by Paulo Teixeira - CT2IWW with the program´s statistics for 2018, in Portugal.

ct2iww-paulo-teixeira

The morning´s last presentation was given by fireman Flávio Areias, from the Santarém Municipal Fire Brigade, who provided a rare insider´s view into the Portuguese emergency response system and how calls to the 112 emergency number are handled. SOTA activators, in particular, found the presentation very valuable since Mr. Areias confirmed that the system can work with the GPS coordinates provided by the caller.

After the lunchbreak, João Fragoso – CT7ABE, gave an overview of the types of antennas and tuners available for QRP and portable operations, followed by Filipe Relvão – CT7ALM and António Cardoso – CT1MH, who talked about their experiences as Scout leaders and the integration with amateur radio activities, namely SOTA activations.

img_20190511_162428

Emmanuel Lomba – CT7AFR, closed the afternoon´s presentation program with “What Can Go Wrong with a SOTA activation?”, an often humorous yet serious personal account of challenges that have arisen whilst activating summits.

img_20190511_165104_burst001_cover

Pedro Carvalho- CT1DBS, closed the first day of this conference with the introduction of the SOTA-CT Portugal Certificate Program (see bellow). The last act was scheduling next year´s meeting, tentatively, for May 16-17 2020, in the Coimbra area.

On Sunday, 12th, the meeting´s “second leg” was taken over by several activators who headed to the hills, activating SOTA summits in different SOTA Portugal regions.

CT SOTA Certificates -SOTA Portugal CT

The Summits on the Air (SOTA) – Portugal CT awards program, implemented in 2012, has
nowadays a growing amount of participants. According to the latest SOTA Database
information, there are over hundred registered chasers and activators.

The DXCC entity Portugal CT has 237 summits and 11 regions qualified for the SOTA
awards scheme. Madeira CT3 and Azores CU have their own separate SOTA programs.

In order to acknowledge the accomplishments of both chasers, activators and SWLs, the
management team of SOTA – Portugal CT implemented the “Diploma SOTA CT ”, a
national Summits on the Air certificate program for the “CT” DXCC entity.

Certificates will be issued, electronically, for the activator, chaser and SWL categories. For more information, the program´s rules can be downloaded from the official SOTA - Portugal website:

Airport security and batteries

On my latest SOTA trip to EA7, my main battery already failed on the first summit, after having used it many times before without problems.
It was a homebrew 16.8V Li-Ion pack, consisting of 8 cells of the 18650 type, in a 4S2P configuration (the red box in the picture with the Lion on it … got it ? LI-ION ? hi).

Now I had a backup battery, so it was not a big issue. The backup is a 4S1P pack which fits in a cassette tape box. In this picture, I was using it with a QCX 20m in the QCX Challenge (which is each last Monday of the month).

Now, I wanted another “backup” for the backup … you can never be too sure , right ?

So what I did was this : I did have a typical Chinese powerbank, which I had filled with 4 Li-Ion cells. In this pack, the four cells are in parallel.

In my suitcase I had a battery box, wired to put these four cells in series, and presto !
I had another 16.8V pack for my KX3 or QCX.
It can be charged with a balanced charger as is, or one could put the cells back in the powerbank and charge them with a regular phone charger.

(I feed the KX3 via an automatic voltage reducer, the QCX can handle the 16.8V directly).

So this could be a solution for those travelling through “battery/radio sensitive” airports.
Most of the time, such powerbanks raise no suspicion, everyone is carrying one !

Good luck !

Luc ON7DQ / KF0CR

Platinum Status on the Mountain Hunter Award for MM0FMF and M0SNA/W6PNG

On our recent trip to the Friedrichshafen Rally, Paul M0SNA/W6PNG reached Platinum Status (20 associations activated) on our joint activation of Hoechsten DM/BW-854 and I reached Platinum on the next joint activation of Attsenberg DL/AL-276.

In total we activated
Italy: I/LO-272, I/PM-202
Switzerland: HB/TI-152, HB/GR-102, HB/GR-103
Liechtenstein: HB0/LI-012
Austria: OE/VB526
Germany: DM/BW-854, DL/AL-276

HB9/M0FMF/P 20m vertical on HB/GR-103, Tguma

We shared just one station on most operations to speed up activation setup and takedown time and used a KX2 with 40/20/10 endfed supported by either 1x 5m pole and trees to 2x 5m pole. The end fed performed best with the feed about 1.7m AGL and 3.2m of the antenna vertical up the 1st pole and the rest horizontal with the far end supported by another pole.

I/W6PNG/P waves for the camera with endfed rigged as Inv-L on a very busy I/PM-202, Monte Mottarone

With so many SOTA activators in the area for the rally, there were plenty of chances for S2S QSOs. Both of us completed HB0/LI-012 by chasing HB0/OE5REO/P from OE/VB-526 3 days after we activated it on the way to the rally. I was able to complete DM/BW-854 the same day by chasing DL/OK1CZ/P also from OE/VB-526.

1905 km SOTA QSO on 144 MHz

On the 16th June 2019 at 0815z, Michael, DB7MM/p successfully completed a 144 MHz SSB QSO with R3PA. Michael was on DM/BM-345 Kalvarienberg and R3PA in KO93JV, that is 1905 km. Propagation mode was Sporadic E.

Michael reveals some details of the contact in the GMA forum (German only): “At 1015 (local) I heard R3PA calling CQ. I called him instantly and he came back with ‘DM7MM’. I then corrected my callsign and the qso was completed. […] Two minutes later he disappeared.” Michael was using 50 W into a 6 element Flexayagi.

Later on that day, good tropo conditions brought also 9A, F, HA, and S5 into his SSB log. Well done Michael!

Unfortunately as a consequence of the database changes, the normal data that Guru presents in his report are temporarily unavailable. Guru has been working directly with Andy, MM0FMF to resolve this but a solution awaits. Guru will post his report within this topic once the data is available.

Finally another reflector statistic to share. In the April News we looked at the Page Views and the New Topics on the reflector. As I mentioned the reflector produces a variety of reports. One of these track the number of what are called daily engaged users. These are people who interact with the reflector either by posting or by liking a post.

That’s all for this quarter. Was there any news missing from your part of the world that could have been shared. If so I am afraid nobody chose to share it.

SOTA activators and activations carried out in Spain and the Spanish-American Countries in July-2019:

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in Spain in July 2019.

EA2 leads this month in number of activations, followed by EA1, EA3, EA6, EA4, EA5 and EA7. We haven’t got any activations from EA8 and EA9.

We’ve got a very good number of activations this last month, being this the highest monthly number in the current year. It’s summer and vacation time for many.

This is the graph of the number of activations per month in 2019 and the averaged montly activations number in 2018.

Here’s the graph for the chasers and number of chases in Spain:

We are glad to see new chasers among which the highight is for EA4MZ and EA7YT with a very important number of chases registered in the database.

This is the graph for the monthly chases in Spain in 2019.

The 2789 chases this month represent an historic record. Well done all the chasers!

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in the Spanish speaking American Countries with existing SOTA associations in July 2019.

We see this month 3 activations in LU Argentina, 1 in LUH and 2 in LUM, as well as 1 activation in TI Costa Rica and 3 activations in XE1 Mexico, which put the total like that of the last month and of March.

This is the graph of the number of activations per month in 2019 and the averaged montly activations number in 2018.

It looks like the activators are getting the habit and at a good pace. Congratulations!

Regarding the chasing activity, there hasn’t been a single SOTA chase uploaded to the database and I’d like to insist on what I said last month: it’s important that all chasers register to the database and upload all their chases to the DB, otherwise it’s like those QSOs never happened for the chasers ranking and the statistics. This is the graph:

With all the activations carried out in July and the number of QSOs logged in those activations, it’s weird that we don’t have any chase in the DB, although it could be the case should the activators had made all their QSOs with stations from outside the Hispanic american countries. But I see this too unlikely. Let’s hope that the chasers will finally register and upload their chases to the database.

This is the graph for the monthly chases in the Spanish speaking American Countries with existing SOTA associations in July 2019.

We hope to see these numbers rising very soon.

Thanks for reading this news. I hope you found it of interest.

SOTA activators and activations carried out in Spain and the Spanish-American Countries in August-2019:

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in Spain in August 2019.

EA1 leads this month in number of activations, followed by EA2, EA5, EA6, EA4, EA3=EA7 and EA8=EA9. We see activations from all EA call areas for the first time in history.

We’ve got a very good number of activations this last month, being this the highest monthly number in the current year. It’s summer and vacation time for many, so we’ve got activators from various countries of the World activating on different zones of the EA territory. They came from CT, OK, VK, K, G, SP and DL. Welcome and thank you ALL!

This is the graph of the number of activations per month in 2019 and the averaged montly activations number in 2018.

Here’s the graph for the chasers and number of chases in Spain:

Some months ago I already ran out of adjectives to describe the chasing results obtained by Manuel EA2DT. They are just indescriptible. Outstanding results by Jorge EA2LU and Pedro EA2CKX with over 400 chases each, as well as those by Ricardo EA1DHB and José EA7YT with over 200. We also see new and prolific chasers with important number of chases registered in the database.

This is the graph for the monthly chases in Spain in 2019.

The 3973 chases this month represent another historic record. Well done all the chasers!

=============================================================

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in the Spanish speaking American Countries with existing SOTA associations in August 2019.

We see this month 1 activation in LUM Mendoza-Argentina, 1 in TI Costa Rica, and 2 activations in XE1 Mexico. We hope to see many more activators very soon.

This is the graph of the number of activations per month in 2019 and the averaged montly activations number in 2018.

We keep seeing activations on every month. Well done. Come on, keep going!

Regarding the chasing activity, we see some SOTA chases on the database in this month of August: 1 in LUM and 4 in XE1. It’s a small improvement and we hope other chasers will register and start uploading their SOTA chases to the database very soon.

Welcome to the October 2019 edition of the SOTA Quarterly News.

Some contributions this quarter from some new contributors including a couple from west of the Atlantic, so I hope that this trend continues. My thanks go to Barry GM4TOE (Quarterly Awards Report) Simon G4TJC, Mike AD5A, Luc ON7DQ, Allan GW4VPX, Tom N2YTF, Colwyn MM0YCJ, Guru EA2IF

Guru’s monthly report is delayed waiting for some data to become available so he will post that later.

We will start with the Quarterly Awards Report form Barry GM4TOE.

SOTA Awards July - September 2019

This report covers award claims for the period July to September 2019. Recently there have been a lot of claims so my apologies for the long list!

Special note should be made of the considerable distances being worked on 13 cm; G4AZS has managed more than 300 km on this band and there is a lot of activity here in GM so greater distances may be possible. Equipment is lightweight and the antennas small so, given the elevation offered by a summit we may well find this distance exceeded.

OZ4RT has reached the total of 50k chaser points, well done John.

There continues to be confusion about how to qualify for the Activator Unique and the SOTA complete awards. Details are on the website but essentially for Activator Unique it is the number of SUMMITS activated not the points gained for activating those summits (similar Rules for the Chaser Unique Award too). To claim the SOTA Complete award you must have both Activated and Chased the summit and, once again, it is the count of the number of Summits not the points gained.

Not much information about merchandise other than to point out that I can now produce name badges with a Red background as well as the existing Blue and Black.

Finally, because of difficulties in producing trophies with a Gold or Black infill to the engraving I have had to delete these options with immediate effect. Red or Blue are the most effective and I will try to find a suitable infill to offer other colours in the future.

I have just placed orders to replenish my stocks of hats with the embroidered SOTA logo. When these arrive I will have to increase prices quite considerably but current stock will remain available until then at the current price. Buy Now to avoid the price increase!

A new Reflector feature

Users may have noticed a little feature we added to the Reflector.

Now, whenever you type a summit reference it automatically gets linked to the corresponding summit page. For example, if I type GW/NW-001 (simply the SOTA ref – no special codes or trickery) it receives the link which viewers can then follow.

What’s happening is that a Discourse plugin component is watching out for any text which matches a regular expression corresponding to the exact format for SOTA references. Anything which isn’t an exact match is ignored. So, it must be in upper case, include the / after the association code, the - between the region code and the summit number, and any leading 0 numerals to make up the full 3-digit number. For example, none of these will show a link to Snowdon: Gw/NW-001, GW/NW-1, GW/NW_001

It’s all fully automatic. No special action is required by the user.

It knows nothing about the database though. So if the Summits site doesn’t have an entry for the summit (e.g. it looked like a ref but actually it was some crazy sequence, or simply an old, retired summit) you’ll get dumped at the Summits site default page.

Dragging a newbie to the summits …
The weather predictions looked good , and I had promised my friend Wil, ON6EO, that we would do a short SOTA trip to the two nearest summits from where we live.

As it happens, these two summits are in the North of France, FL/NO-133 and FL/NO-144.
So on August 21st, we went over there to have some radio fun.

Wil told me that he would only sit beside me and watch me “doing SOTA”. He had no intention of activating himself. Yeah, yeah, I heard him …

Of course I was tempted, and after I had my share of QSO’s, I said “now it’s your turn” … it took some pushing and convincing talk … but I finally got him a headset and microphone on the head, and a small logbook and pen in the hands … and he started calling “CQ SOTA” …

On FL/NO-133 this resulted in 14 QSO’s, on FL/NO-144 that afternoon, he made another 6.

On both summits, he even made a S2S QSO, one was EA6KB on EA6/MA-052, Puig de Maria, the other was HB9/DH8WN/P on HB/GR-20, Piz Turba.

Well done for a “newbie” !

Here our humble 9.15m endfed, compared to the 200m TV tower on FL/NO-144, Mont des Cats.

After a while, I couldn’t get the microphone back … Wil was getting the hang of it …

Since it was such a nice day, we also took some time to play with a QCX 40m, and an EFHW.

Not related to SOTA, but we got a visitor too.
It was Pascal ‘Duc’ F5UQE which I know very well from the SKCC activities. He lives just 5 km down the Mont des Cats … and of course he called me first on the 40m band, before jumping on his motorbike and some minutes later he was standing beside me … what a nice surprise !

Here ON7DQ and F5UQE

It was a great SOTA day !

Radio Tales from Wales

Since my last report we’ve had some glorious weather in Wales and many activators have taken advantage of this by hitting some of the high pointers and creating some activity on both VHF and HF.

Making frequent visits to Wales from his home QTH of Ludlow is Philip G4HQB . A few months ago Philip crossed 500 activation points and is now focused on getting his Mountain Goat over the next few years. Lately he’s been taking advantage of the fine weather by hitting the Welsh high pointers and making inroads into his 1000 point goal. Mainly using 2m Philip puts out a good signal using a variety of antennae depending on the circumstances…keep up the good work Philip.

Philip G4HQB/p looking for 2m contacts with an unseen beam on his fibreglass fishing pole.

Not to be outdone, Phil’s XYL can be heard quite often from the hills of Wales and along the border. Like Philip, Gillian 2E0OVW is an experienced hill walker and has already amassed a large number of activation points since September 2018 when she started SOTA…well done Gillian.

Gillian 2E0OVW heading for a SOTA summit

During September John M0VCM made his first foray into Snowdonia and a few high pointers which finds him heading nicely towards 500 activation points…thanks for the chaser points John.

On the 10th of September I was really surprised when I heard James M0JCQ/p calling on 2m FM from Great Gable G/LD-005 and even more surprised when he came back to my call, we soon exchanged signal reports. It’s not very often I get the Lake District but my 5 element beam and lift conditions certainly pulled in James for a 168 mile SOTA contact.

I’ve added a link to Paul M0PLA ’s blog which can be found below in the list of useful Blogs. Paul has been busy in Europe hitting the summits on his way to and from the radio rally at Friedrichshafen then as soon as he was back he was hitting the summits in North Wales…visit his Blog.

Paul MW0PLA/p on Carnedd y Filiast GW/NW-032

Tom M1EYP and Jimmy M0HGY were once more back in Wales to complete Mid Wales, I managed one s2s with them during their week. Alistair M0TYM from near Wolverhampton spent time in August hitting some of the big ones in Wales to push his activator points to over 500. I’m also keeping my eye on the SOTA database as we have one Welsh activator who is close to Mountain Goat…keep going Ian.

I visited Hope Mountain GW/NW-062 on the 18th of September and immediately ran into breakthrough and de-sensing problems on my Yaesu FT2 on 2m-fm. A quick change over to my Yaesu FT270 and the problem was solved with 16 crystal clear chasers in the log. There are large communication towers just below the summit so come prepared if your rig suffers from being too close to this type of installation. No such problems on HF (KX2) with 13 contacts on 80m and 60m before I had to go QRT.

From Tom N2YTF
Finally getting to SOTA Sloth

Its taken me since 2008, but I finally got my Shack Sloth on Sept 8, 2019. When I first tried SOTA in 2008, there was only part of W2 in the US, and I got lost with my wife the first 2 times I tried to summit W2/EH-003, South Beacon. There were no trail maps, and what maps did exist at the time I did not know about. What government had what authority in the area was still being worked out so the parks were not organized.

Over the years I became a bit of a SOTA addict, with never enough time to fully explore my passion. I was frustrated more of the US wasn’t in SOTA and there weren’t many summits close to me, so I did my best to publicize it and I started the W1 area. I thought it might be a good idea to add an area that was home to ARRL HQ.

I can’t believe how much SOTA in the US has changed since 2008----truly the program is unrecognizable from those years. I have watched the emergence of many US shack sloths and goats, something I never could have imagined when I was starting W1. I have to say I was quite envious as so many had so much time to play and I daydreamed of the time I could finally hit shack sloth and mountain goat (goat is still a long way off).

My home QTH is radio challenged, with noisy powerlines on two sides and a suburban sized lot only half way up a moderate hill…so chasing has always been challenging for me…particularly in this new era of QRP. Unfortunately my location is also far from any rich summit area.

So its not Double Super Sloth, but I am quite happy with myself and with SOTA and I can’t wait for my little crystal cubes to arrive (because you need one for the office and one for the home of course when you are a true junkie!)

I recall one of Tom’s early reports included a video where he made a QSO with Steve WG0AT when the the W0 associations were just being developed. Steve was not bitten by the SOTA bug at that time and now 10 years later Steve is a double goat and more than 3x shack sloth if I have read the tables correctly… Jim G0CQK

A very hot SOTA activation …

After all my travels in the first half of 2019 (getting my MG in March, EA7 trip in May/June and the FH road trip with 20 summits, also in June) , I still felt the urge to do “another one” …

Little did Iknow that I planned a summit on the HOTTEST day in July !

Want to know how it went and how I kept my rig and myself “cool” … read my report here:

From Colwyn MM0YCJ
Quintuple mountain goat. 14th August 2019.

Thanks to everyone for the very kind comments about my quintuple Mountain Goatdom on Reflector, but the real thanks must go to my partner Ann, who often comments that I continue to “act the goat!”

My 5000th point was gained on the first activation of a Swiss summit, HB/VD-008 (Petit Muveran) on the 14th August 2019. I found the ascent dangerous because of steep, loose rock and I do not recommend attempting the peak. However, once established on the summit of Le Petit Muveran, it was a lovely day and I was able to sit comfortably in the sunshine during the activation; but concerned about surviving the exposed scramble back down! My 4000th activator point was gained on another very fine Swiss summit, HB/GR-025 (Piz Picuogl) on the 8th April 2018. In sharp contrast my 3000th point was gained at home on GM/WS-200 (Pap of Glencoe) on 4/1/2016. As is often the case we were sheltering on the lee side of a Scottish summit cairn and the wind was so strong we were required to do a bit of crawling to get safely to the top.

Timewise, quingoatdom has taken me a total of 8 years and 7 months, with a grand total of 9711 QSOs to reach this milestone. The timeline of these five “mountain goats” was;

Mountain Goat; 17th January 2011 – 16th September 2012 – 21 months

Double Mountain Goat; 16th September 2012 - 18th January 2014 – 16 months

Triple Mountain Goat; 18th January 2014 – 4th January 2016 – 24 months

Quadruple Mountain Goat; 4th January 2016 – 8th April 2018 – 27 months

Quintuple Mountain Goat; 8th April 2018 – 14th August 2019 - 16 months

The 9711 QSOs were amassed by transmitting from 851 summits (183, 153, 180, 168 and 167 summits respectively; and 1710, 2180, 2620, 1756 and 1445 QSOs respectively for each goat!) That is an overall average of 11.4 QSOs for each summit activated and for each Goat the average QSOs per summit was; 9.3 QSOs, 14.2 QSOs, 14.5 QSOs, 10.4 QSOs and in the previous 16 months a slightly higher average of 11.4 QSOs.

The number of QSOs on each summit has ranged from 1 QSO (5 summits) to 59 contacts on GM/CS-029 (Carn Liath) on 26th August 2017. In fact there have been a small number of summits where I made no QSOs, but obviously they were not recorded on the SOTA database. After empty rehearsals on two Scottish summits, I was successful on the second attempts, but for the overseas ones, they were written off as good training, or so I tell myself.

The 851 recorded summits include nine where I failed to make 4 contacts; 2 in Italy, 2 at home in Scotland, one in Hungary, one Swiss, the highest peak on The Falkland Islands, one in Norway and one in Iceland. In my home association of Scotland I have transmitted from 573 summits, down to single summits in Denmark, Lichtenstein, Sweden, Poland, Slovakia, Faroe Islands, USA and Luxembourg.

I note, that my second highest association summit total (79) is Switzerland, third is Austria (OE on 31) and fourth is England with 29 summits. I have been very fortunate to travel overseas with work and holidays and officially I have transmitted from 32 SOTA associations so hold Platinum Mountain Explorer Award Status.

On top of The Dom (4545m) HB/VS-002, on 3rd September 2019.

Of the 851 total there were 113 summits worth 1 point, 133 worth 2 points, 214 worth 4 points, 110 worth 6 points, 112 worth 8 points and my preferred option every time, 154 summits worth 10 points. Our highest peak so far has been the Strahlhorn (4190m), HB/VS-016 in April 2017, although I have twice now exceeded that height on the Nadelhorn (4327m) on 30th August and The Dom (4545m) 3rd September 2019.

I enjoy the extra challenge of activating in winter, or at least I have up until now, with 213 (25%) of my summits qualifying for winter bonus points. I can also substitute the avalanche probe I am carrying anyway to support the dipoles, instead of a fishing pole! Using skis is particularly good for descent and this was the method I used to ascend HB/GR-025 (Piz Picuogl) for my 4000th point. Although we also summited on Piz Kesch (HB/GR-012, 3418m) two days later, the weather and climbing conditions dictated a swift descent with no time for an attempted activation.

The maximum number of summits I have activated in any 24 hour period is 4 on 6th November 2011, 5th May 2012, 19th July 2014 and 31st May 2015. Multiple summit days seem to have been less common in recent years!

There are 2619 different call signs in my activator log, although a small number are duplicates when mobile/portable/etc, and I found a few errors which I corrected (and there will be others I know), so I have contacts with just over 2600 people. A big thanks to everyone I have spoken with since January 2011; long may it continue.

As I only use voice the split is 1941 QSOs on FM and 7770 on SSB. I really started using 20m on an overseas trip when my 40m antenna snapped and I couldn’t repair it in the field. It is great to speak to chasers across Europe and I have occasional transatlantic contacts, which are always a pleasure. However, my QSO with Paul, VK5PAS, in South Australia was special and two QSOs, on consecutive nights with ZL1BYZ from Switzerland to Auckland in January 2017 on 14MHz stand out. I have also spoken with an Antarctic station (Palmer Station), although I was 56 degrees south on Two Sisters (VP8/EF-013) in The Falkland Islands at the time!

My most commonly used SSB band is 14MHz with a total of 4213 contacts, 7MHz with 3333. I did attempt previous SOTA challenges and amassed a paltry 196 contacts on 24MHz, only 22 contacts on 28MHz and a fine total of 3 on 50MHz. On FM I have 1941 QSOs on 144MHz.

From the start of my activation career I have used the same FT817 and a VX7 both blasting out 5 watts. I never invested in a lightweight ATU so relied on resonant inverted-V dipoles; this explains why so many of my early activations were single band. I then bought an Elecraft KX2 (10 watts and internal ATU), but having experienced early microphone problems, I often still carry the FT817 as a back-up. So much for trying to lighten the load!

My thanks go to all of the chasers with whom I have spoken. It is a joy (and often a relief) to speak to you all. My top 10 chasers are Don (G0RQL on 265 QSOs). It is always a pleasure to hear from Don, also reassuring that all is well with the World! Manuel (EA2DT with 220 QSOs) is a welcome regular. Next is a second regular Spanish station Pedro (EA2CKX on 218 QSOs). Robin, who coincidentally we once met on a summit by accident (GM7PKT/P on 99 summit-2-summit QSOs, plus 13 mobile and 16 base QSOs, a total of 128, but most of those with Robin being summit to summit contacts). Ken, who also lives in Edinburgh (GM0AXY) on 117, has been my local radio expert and he keeps me up-to-date reporting the conditions and weather at home to help me while activating. Michael (DJ5AV) with 101, Mick from Manchester (M0MDA on 97). Ken (G0FEX) with 95 QSOs, Terry (G0VWP) on 94 and Christine also in Edinburgh (GM4YMM) with 90 QSOs.

There are 501 summit-2-summit contacts in my log, 99 of them with Robin (GM7PKT/P).

I previously read the excellent RSGB book by Jamie Davies, “SOTA explained: a beginner’s guide to hilltop radio.” The authors’ description of a SOTA activation as a combination of skill and chance, but without certainty of outcome, chimes with my own experience. If SOTA activating was easy, any appeal would quickly fade. He later writes, SOTA activating is… “The best of both worlds: beautiful hills and a little extra radio fun to be had at the top.”

Thanks to MM0DHY (Adrian) who was the reason I took up SOTA, at least that is who I blame when blame is required!!! Despite the excitement of activating The Inaccessible Pinnacle on Skye and then later The Old Man of Hoy in August 2016, I look forward to future joint activations, I think! I would also like to thank the members of the Cockenzie and Port Seaton Amateur Radio Club, especially Bob Glasgow BEM (GM4UYZ), for guiding me through amateur radio licencing so successfully.

Many, many thanks again to everyone for all of your support and help. If you do hear me calling CQ, please try to get through to me. I also welcome all chaser SPOTS on Sotawatch to increase my average QSO rate.

73s and I hope to speak to you all further down the log.

SOTA along the Camino de Santiago.

We’ve got Andrew VK1DA walking the French Camino de Santiago these days.

He started in St. Jean au Pied de Port (France) over the end of August and on his Camino through the Navarra lands he activated 3 different SOTAs with the support and the company of Ignacio EA2BD, Jorge EA2LU y Guru EA2IF.

From left to right: Ignacio EA2BD, Jorge EA2LU and Andrew VK1DA at Mt. Ortzantzurieta summit EA2/NV-012 on August 28th 2019.

Andrew VK1DA activating Mt. Erreniega EA2/NV-092 on August 31st 2019 with Guru EA2IF. Andrew chased this summit several months ago from his QTH in VK and he has now activated it, thus making it a Complete on this remote-for-him summit. Well done!

Andrew VK1DA activating Mt. San Cristóbal EA2/NV-119 on September 1st with Ignacio EA2BD.

Upon Andrew’s arrival to the province and the city of León, he met Juan EA1AER to activate some SOTAs with him and visit León city and the mountains of León province.

On September 23rd, Andrew VK1DA and Juan EA1AER activated the 6 pointer SOTA Peña de Ten - EA1/LE-197 at 1.223m a.s.l.

Later that same day, Andrew VK1DA with Juan EA1AER and a group of hams from León tried to activate the SOTA La Campeona EA1/LE-165, but a sad technical mistake due to the EA group unknowing or inadvertedly not meeting an important part of the SOTA rules plus the communication problems due to each other very limited knowledge of the counterpartner native language invalidated the SOTA activation and it couldn’t be such considered.

L to R: Victor EA1NY; Eliseo EA1IVD; Juan EA1AER; Agustín EA1AV; Andrew VK1DA.

It was a shame, but, anyhow, Andrew felt very grateful to Juan EA1AER and the group of hams from León for their kindness, help and availability.
Andrew is currently walking on the Galicia region, the province of Lugo:
imagen
but it looks like he’s run out of time to do any more SOTAs in the final part of his Camino through the Galicia region, as he expects his arrival to Santiago de Compostela by October 6th or 7th and his return flight departs on the 8th.

It’s being a nice pleasure having Andrew over here all these days and we wish he will continue enjoying his Camino until he reaches Santiago de Compostela. We also want to wish him a very good return flight to Australia.

SOTA activators and activations carried out in Spain and the Spanish-American Countries in October-2019:

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in Spain in October 2019.

EA1 leads again this month in number of activations, followed by EA2=EA5, EA4=EA6, EA7, EA3 and EA8. We don’t see any activation from the EA9 call area.

This is the graph of the number of activations per month in 2019 and the averaged montly activations number in 2018.

We see a significant decrease with respect to the previous months, which I interpret as a clear sign that summer and vacations are over. Well done and thanks to all activators!

Here’s the graph for the chasers and number of chases in Spain:

The TOP 5 of the EA chasers this month is EA2DT, EA2IF, EA2CKX, EA1DHB and EA5GMB. I encourage to all those not doing it yet to register and upload their chases onto the SOTA database.

This is the graph for the monthly chases in Spain in 2019.

Like the activations, we see the chases have also decreased with respect to the previous months, thus indicating that summer and vacations are over, but it’s still a good number. Well done and thanks to all the chasers!

=============================================================

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in the Spanish speaking American Countries with existing SOTA associations in October 2019.

We see this month 4 activations in LUM Mendoza-Argentina and 2 in TI Costa Rica. Well done and thanks to the activators!
I want to mention an anomaly I see this month as well as I saw it last month. the activator @LU1MAW declares his activator callsign as LU1MAW/M. We don’t know if he is signing /M because he activated from a vehicle but this is clearly prohibited according to the General Rules and a specific information about this in my last month bulletin.

This is the graph of the number of activations per month in 2019 and the averaged montly activations number in 2018.

We see activation slightly increasing and we keep seeing activations on every month. Being this month triple of the 2018 monthly average. Well done. Come on, keep going!

Regarding the chasing activity, we see 4 chases from KP4 and 1 in LUM. We hope other chasers will register and start uploading their SOTA chases to the database very soon.
This is the graph:

From my DEC-2019 news in Spanish

SOTA activators and activations carried out in Spain and the Spanish-American Countries in November-2019:

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in Spain in November 2019.

EA8 is the call area with the greatest number of activations thanks to visitors from Germany, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Check Rep.
Following EA7, mainly due to the intense activity carried out by the great couple:
Alejandro (EA4DON) imagen
and
Elena (EA4DOS) imagen
Then we find EA1, thanks to the activators arrived from Switzerland, the Autonomous Comunity of Euskadi and Javier (EA2GM) as the only activator from EA1, as he lives in Oviedo.
EA6 follows in number of activations, where we again see an activator from Switzerland as well as 2 well known local activators.
EA3 is the following area in number of activations, thanks to an activator from the Spanish Autonomous Comunity of Euskadi and a number of local activators among whom we have a father (EA3AVV) and his son (EC3TW).
In EA5 we again see activations carried out by the hyper-active couple from Madrid, Alejandro (EA4DON) and Elena (EA4DOS).
We see relatively few activations in EA2, but we’ve got several days with snow and lots of rain. I recently heard on TV that this has been the most rainy November over the last 7 years in Pamplona.
Finally we see EA4, where Gonzalo (EA4ESP) carried out one activation.
As usual, we don’t see any activations from EA9.

This is the graph of the number of activations per month in 2019 and the averaged montly activations number in 2018, with 1082 activations up to now:

We see a slight decrease, but it’s understandable due to WX restrictions in the Northern areas, where we usually see most activations. Well done and thanks to all activators!

Here’s the graph for the chasers and number of chases in Spain:

The TOP 5 of the chasers in EA is: EA2DT, EA2IF, EA7GV, EA2LU and EA2CKX very closely followed by EA1DHB. As I use to say, I encourage to all those not doing it yet to register and upload their chases onto the SOTA database, as we don’t have any single chase in the database from EA8 and EA9, but I know some hams chasing SOTA from those areas.
This is the graph for the monthly chases in Spain in 2019 with 25103 chases up to now:

Chases have also experienced a decrease this November and I think it might be due to a WX-related reduced number of activations and also to the pre-winter bonus effect, as many activators prefer to wait and activate in December in order to get the always welcome winter bonus points. However, it’s still a good number, well over last year’s average. Well done and thanks to all the chasers!

=============================================================

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in the Spanish speaking American Countries with existing SOTA associations in November 2019.

We see 5 activations in LU, 3 in LUM (Mendoza), 2 in LUD (Buenos Aires) and 2 activations in KP4, one of which was Mt. Pirata KP4/VQ-001 carried out by the team who activated the Is. of Vieques.
imagen
Well done and thanks to all the activators!

This is the graph of the number of activations per month in 2019 and the averaged montly activations number in 2018, with a total of 60 activations up to now:

We keep seeing activations on every month and even increasing in number. Bravo!

Regarding the chasing activity, we see this November 12 chases on the database: 7 chases in LU, 4 in XE and 1 in KP4. You can see it here:

Again, I encourage to all those not doing it yet to register and upload their chases onto the SOTA database.
This is the graph for the monthly chases in the Spanish speaking American Countries with existing SOTA associations in November 2019, with 32 chases up to now:

We hope this current increasing trend will consolidate.

We still have not had any regular contributors west of the Atlantic or south of the Equator so far so if you are interesting in doing so on a quarterly basis please let me know.

Please note that if you receive this as an email then you cannot reply by email as it goes nowhere. You need to message me directly via a PM.

Importantly if you have something to be added to the January 2020 Quarterly New, do not post it as as reply to this otherwise it will be instantly seen by everyone here and will no longer be news.

Welcome to the January 2020 edition New Year. I wish everyone here a Happy New Year or as they say in the Scottish West coast islands - bliadhna Mhath Ùr

A January news compilation is not a really timely idea as everyone is involved in so many other holiday activities, so I have decided (yes, unilaterally) to realign the quarterly news cycle to February, May, August. November so as to avoid the year end holiday period. To be clear that does not include February 2020 at the end of this current month although, I think that Guru EA2IF may have his regular report on Spanish activity.

Some contributions this quarter from some new contributors including one from west of the Atlantic, so I hope that this trend continues. Barry has been swamped with orders to the SOTA shop so has not been able to provide an awards report at this time. He may report independently when he has time. My thanks go to Simon G4TJC, Luc ON7DQ, Allan GW4VPX, Guru EA2IF, Victor GI4ONL, Etienne K7ATN, Rado S58R, Have I forgotten anyone? :frowning:

About Reflector Categories
When you create a new topic one of the options to select is the category. Categories are useful as they can help people who are new to the reflector. As well when you read the posts in a topic, the reflector will choose which posts to suggest to you, influenced to some extent by the category people have selected for the topics they created. When creating a topic, the top of the category list in the drop down box will be Old Reflector which is the default category - you may wonder why. Well when this reflector was created all of the posts from the original reflector were copied over and that was just over 8400 posts. So far the category that appears to have had the most posts since August 2014 is Activstion Reports which shows 3101 posts at the time of writing which is a long way below those from the old reflector. Some of us who have the capability to do so have tried to reclassify as many of the posts that were copied over from the old reflector to the current categories but is is very time consuming and what I can assure you is, that there are few topics from the old reflector that had more that 30 posts that have not been reclassified. However that still leaves a great number of posts from the old system. So long as that “Old Reflector” category has more posts that any current category, when you create a new topic, the first category will be “Old Reflector” so please select your category carefully. Eventually at some time I anticpate that “Activation Reports” will become top of the list but there is quite a long way to go. In the meantime those of us who can, will monitor the categories of new topics and adjust them as needed according to our interpretation of the topic content. Who can do this? Anyone who has Admin capability and also anyone who has qualified by some parameters inbuilt in the reflector for what the reflector refers to as trust level 3 or “Regular” in the title, can do this and as I write that is 23 people.

Simon G4TJC reminded me that in same way as I am intending to avoid the holidays around the year end the summits team also avoid that period.

In his own words:
Just to note that as usual we don’t have uploads of new summits for 1st January. But rest assured we have plenty in preparation.

For 2020 you can expect to see more associations in South America. We have on-going work in North America. In Europe we’re working on an update to EA1. Work continues in the Pacific region.

I had meant to work out how many summits we added in 2019, but you’ll have to wait a few days for an update from me. (from MM0FMF 10512)

Enjoy yourselves over the New Year and good luck in the Challenge!

2019 The Year of The Goat

Following on from 2018 when I recorded the highest ever score by a UK activator in a calendar year with 873 points, I thought I would set myself a challenge to hit 1000 points in 2019.

Here is a brief chronological account of “The Journey”.

January: A non-SOTA month for me due to a problem with sciatica.

February: Just 4 local activations in GI with my normal call GI4ONL/P. My legs were well out of practice, and my waist measurement was increasing. A bad combination for SOTA!

March: 8 activations in EA8/GC signing EA8/G4ONL/P and 1 summit in EI using my Irish call EI7KP/P with the good company of my canine friend, Ellie.

Summit of EA8/GC-010 with solar powered installation

My trusty companion Ellie on EI/IN-009

April: A relatively lean SOTA month with just 7 activations, 3 in GI, 3 in EI and 1 in G, a joint activation with my good friend, Phil G4OBK.

May: This was the busiest month of the year with 61 activations, 51 of these in OK using my Czech call OK8VM/P. Phil, also using his Czech call, OK8CDX/P, accompanied me on this 8 day tour. On one of the summits we met Jarek SP9MA, who kindly allowed us to finish our activation before bidding us farewell and setting up his station.

Phil OK8CDX/P (left) with Victor OK8VM/P on OK/VY-015

OK8VM/P with OK8CDX/P and Jarek OK/SP9MA/P on OK/PA-036

I also activated 10 summits in EA6/MA including 2 joint activations with fellow SOTAist, Ricardo EA6LU

Ricardo EA6LU/P with EA6/G4ONL/P on EA6/MA-042

June: Another non-activating month. Perhaps I felt like a rest after the frenzy of activity in May!
The month was not entirely SOTA free however, as I used the time off to visit Ham Radio in Friedrichshafen, and put a face to many of the people that I had contacted as a chaser.

The QSL wall at FN, meeting point for SOTA @ 12:00

July: I was off on my travels again, this time to France and the FL/VO region, where I activated 33 summits along with my friend Pete, M0HQO

Pete F/M0HQO/P on Le Donon FL/VO-023

August: Only 1 local GI activation. Occasionally I do things other than SOTA, (but not too often).

September: It was time for yet another 8 day Czech tour with Phil OK8CDX. This time we activated 45 summits in OK and 1 in OE, a new SOTA country for me. We had hoped to top 50 activations again on this trip but the weather had other ideas and curtailed us on a couple of days.

Phil OE/G4OBK/P on OE/NO-135

October: Croatia was next, another new SOTA country for me. It was my great pleasure to meet up with Ivica 9A6CW for 3 joint activations out of the 11 that I did in 9A.

Victor 9A/G4ONL/P on 9A/DH-002

Ivica 9A6CW/P trying my gear on 9A/DH-071

November: Mainly due to the inclement weather, this month had no activations.

December: This was crunch time, with 50 points still required to reach my target of 1K. The magic number was surpassed after 5 summits in GI and 2 in EI.

The year ended with the grand total of 1001 points.

Statistics:
To reach 1001 points in 2019, I activated 179 unique summits in 9 countries and 16 regions. I made a total of 2352 QSOs using mainly CW but also SSB on HF and some FM on 2 metres.
Several thousands of miles/kilometers were driven and possibly even more thousands of GBP, Euro, CZK and HRK spent, (I’m afraid to even try to estimate the cost).

Equipment:
On HF I used my Elecraft KX2 running approx.10 Watts. It has an internal 2600mAh Lipo battery pack, which only once had to be changed, and that was midway through the 10th activation in a single day! My antenna is a homemade link dipole for 17/20/30/40 metres, supported on a 4 metre fiberglass fishing pole. For 2 metres I use a Yaesu FT-270 with a Diamond, (or clone), RH-770 telescopic whip. These aerials give fantastic results, but tend to be a little fragile if not handled carefully.

What’s next?
My next objective is to get my 4th Mountain Goat and I am only 122 short of the necessary 4000 points. This target will hopefully be reached early in 2020.

To date I have 2 weeks booked in EA8/GC in March and there is another OK tour in the planning with Phil G4OBK in April/May for 9 days. I really hope to go back to Croatia around September time, and I have a few more ideas floating around for May, June and July – watch this space!

Callsigns explained:
I often get asked why I no longer use xx/GI4ONL when operating abroad, so here’s the explanation.
For over 30 years my amateur licence had my callsign as GI4ONL however a few years ago this was changed to G(#)4ONL In the UK amateur radio licences are issued by OFCOM the government regulatory authority. For reasons best known to them, they decided they would no longer issue regional licences like GI, GM, GW etc, but instead would issue a standardized UK licence with the (#) being replaced by a letter identifying the UK region the station is operating in. Since this change I now must lose my GI identity and use xx/G4ONL when operating under CEPT, something that really annoys me, but I have to abide by the rules.

Acknowledgements :
A huge thank you to the 644 chasers for all the contacts over the year from the various summits. As every activator knows, no chasers = no qualification!

I would also like to thank Phil G4OBK, Ricardo EA6LU, Pete M0HQO, and Ivica 9A6CW for their company on our joint activations. We certainly had some fun times with plenty of laughter.

Without the MT none of this would have been possible and I would like to express my sincere gratitude for all the hard work they put into the SOTA programme.

Finale:

So there you have it my Year of the Goat 2019, and a fantastic series of adventures. I feel very lucky to have met so many friends through SOTA both as an activator and chaser and look forward to 2020 and beyond.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy, Prosperous and Peaceful New Year.

Pacific North West

New Activators for 2019 – In 2019 in the Pacific Northwest of North America there was a huge crop of new activators – those that just got started on all the SOTA fun since January 2019. In this case “a bunch” is 70 new Northwest activators that got a signal out from 425 summits. (In 2018 the total was 52 activators from 159 summits – wow, what a change.)

- Association 2019 New Activators New Total Activations
VE7 British Columbia 4 30
W7I Idaho 11 21
W7M Montana 1 1
W7O Oregon 27 227
W7W Washington 27 156

If you look at things on a per capita basis, it’s W7O this year that won out as the PNW SOTA Association with the most activity, followed closely by W7I. And I would have liked to recognize new CHASERS in 2019 – but there are so many and the database is a challenge for looking up Chasers that started at a particular time.

New Activators Getting Out for the First Points – Chris-KG7VLX writes this about inviting some new folks to try Summits on the Air:

" I posted on the Idaho Ham Radio Operators page on Facebook that I was going to activate Lucky Peak (Idaho) and had room and equipment for people to tag along. I gave out my email and got about 5 people that were “interested.” It ended up being myself, Gregg-W7GRM, Vince-KD7TWW and Scott-KJ7CZY. This ended up being beneficial since the day we went up was also a FM simplex contest put on by the Southwest Idaho Amateur Radio Club. We had plenty of 2m FM simplex chasers available for the hams with Tech licenses, and it was a good thing because HF was dead.

We met at a local coffee shop and I started with a five-minute show and tell. I covered posting alerts and spots, the basic SOTA exchange and gave out summit info. I always print off a map from the SOTA mapping web site with all the summit info and use it as my log sheet.

The walk up is about a 1/3 mile with maybe 300 feet of elevation gain. We took it nice and slow. On the summit we spread out and everyone got started with HT’s while I set up my FT817 and a homemade VHF ground plane antenna on a SOTA pole.

Greg had some experience and a yagi so he was off and running with no problems. Scott and Vince worked for about 20 minutes and were having some trouble with the stock HT antennas for distant contacts. We ended up gathering around my FT-817 and just passing the mic back and forth. With the next set of rain clouds headed our way; we called it a day before we got soaked.

No news from ON7DQ …
… or is there ?

I didn’t do any SOTA lately, but was very busy preparing a talk for our local radio club.
The subject was "The nanoVNA … from Theory to Practice"
Aha ! This should interest anyone tinkering with antennas, so it is related to SOTA after all, right ?

This nanoVNA has become immensely popular, where else can you buy a Vector Network Analyzer for less than 30€ ?
It’s only the size of a credit card, so it fits in any SOTA backpack.
For home use, there is some excellent (and FREE) PC software to match it as well.

My talk went very well, about 50 people attended, and it lasted some four hours . I was exhausted … and my audience even more ! HI

A report (in Dutch) and some pics are here to enjoy :
https://on4os.be/mega-opkomst-voordracht-nanovna/
So you can see what this MG is up to when not on a summit …

Now as a New Years gift to the community, I just finished an English translation of my slides, and uploaded them to the nanoVNA newsgroup (click here )
I’m not sure if you can download it without being a member of that group, but I can send it via mail if anyone is interested.

Radio Tales from Wales by Allan GW4VPX

Happy New Year everybody.

Winter bonus arrived in December but I didn’t take advantage of it due to other commitments. However, I did catch a few out on the mountains of Wales and on some of the big ones too. Lawrence M7LOZ/p braved the elements on Snowdon (GW/NW-001) giving us a 5/8 each way, let’s hope that it’s one of many activations in 2020. Richard M1HAX/p used the December Winter Bonus period to full effect and activated quite a few 8 pointers. I caught him on both Glasgwm (GW/NW-014) and Aran Fawddwy (GW/NW-007) on the 31st of December. On the same day Rod M0JLA and Viki M6BWA were on Moel Eilio (GW/NW-022). I never heard Rod on either 60m or 80m due to some odd band conditions but Viki made my log on both 2m and 70cms. Jonathan GW2HFR hopes to get his Mountain Goat this year and was out on the renamed GW/NW-034 (now Foel Cedig) with a 4/4-4/3 between us on 18.146 ssb! I did manage to catch Paul M0PLA on Corndon Hill (GW/MW-013) on the 2nd of January on his 5 summit winter bonus dash 3/1 sent, 5/3 returned, another Sota activator who his working hard to get MG this year (details on his blog).

One of our faithful West Wales chasers Frank MW0OFA sent me this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piUalpc0zUY&t=603s of an activation by Adrian M0AAG over the festive season activating Moel Hebog GW/NW-014…let’s hope that we see a lot more activations by Adrian in 2020…I just loved his excitement with his first S2S…I still think it’s magical.

Since I installed a few Swann security cameras I’ve had interference trouble across the 2m band and this has curtailed my long distance SOTA chasing unless I switch the system off. I’ve tried all the usual methods of prevention but to no avail. The system came with 2x2 twisted pairs of connecting cables (non-screened) so I have now purchased a drum of screened Cat5 and screened connectors. I did such a good job of installing the first system in conduit that it’s going to take me a while to make the changes…I’ll report back in a few months time.

I really ‘enjoyed’ my cold and wet New Year’s day activation of Foel Cwm Cerwyn (GW/MW-011) with 21 contacts on 80m and 20 contacts on 2m. I had nine S2S with Simon G4TJC , Tom M1EYP , Dave G3TQQ , Nick G4OOE making my log all on 80m from England. Five 2m/FM S2S were with activators on the mountains in Wales. It was really great to get Aled MW0UPH on Mynydd Bodafon (GW/NW-071) with a promise that he would be out more often in 2020. John GW4TQE was doing the usual double of Moel y Gamelin (GW/NW-42) and Cyrn y Brain (GW/NW-043) and I managed get him on GW/NW-042. Dave MW0XRT was on Foel Fenlli (GW/NW-071) with 5/5-5/3 and to end my ‘miserable weather’ day I was happy to get Andrew M1CJE and Richard M1HAX in the log from a miserable Fan Brycheiniog (GW/SW-003) with 5/9 each way. By this time I had got too cold and damp to do anymore bands so beat a hasty retreat downhill on a circular route. Thanks to all chasers and activators for a pleasurable radio day.

A miserable Foel Cwmcerwyn

If you are venturing on to the hills and mountains of Wales please send me a brief report and especially some pictures of your activation so that I can include them here.

SOTA activators and activations carried out in Spain and the Spanish-American Countries in December-2019:

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in Spain in December 2019.

This was the second month ever with activations in all EA call areas.
imagen
EA1 is the call area with the greatest number of activations to which contributed activators arrived from Portugal and EA2. Following we have EA2, EA4, EA3, EA6=EA8, EA7, EA5 and EA9. In EA3 there were some activations carried out by collegues arrived from Switzerland and Check Rep. We see in EA7 contributions by colleagues from EA5 and Scotland. All activations in EA8 were carried out by colleagues from abroad; from Switzerland and The Netherlands. The single activation in EA9 was carried out by a colleague from Scotland. Welcome all visitors and thanks to all the activators!

This is the graph of the number of activations per month in 2019 and the averaged montly activations number in 2018, with a total of 1212 activations in the whole year 2019 , representing a 42% increase with respect to the 854 activations in 2018:

Here’s the graph for the chasers and number of chases in Spain:

The TOP 5 of the chasers in EA is: EA2DT, EA7GV, EA2IF, EA2LU and EA2CKX, closely followed by EA5GMB, EA7YT and EA1DHB. As usual, I encourage to all those not doing it yet to register and upload their chases onto the new SOTA database, as we don’t have any single chase in the database from EA8 and EA9, but I know of some hams chasing SOTA from those areas.

This is the graph for the monthly chases in Spain in 2019 with 27975 chases in the whole year 2019:

After having seen a decrease of the chases in the 2 previous months, we see a very good number of chases this last month of December. Well done and thanks to all the chasers!

=============================================================

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in the Spanish speaking American Countries with existing SOTA associations in December 2019.

We see 1 activation in LUM (Mendoza-Argentina) and 1 in TI. Thanks to the activators!

This is the graph of the number of activations per month in 2019 and the averaged montly activations number in 2018, with a total of 62 activations in the whole year 2019 , representing a 326% increase with respect to the 19 activations in 2018. Bravo!

The year 2019 is over and we’ve seen activations on every month. Bravo!

Regarding the chasing activity this last December, we see 4 chases in LU and 1 in TI. You can see it here:

Again, I encourage to all those not doing it yet to register and upload their chases onto the SOTA database.

This is the graph for the monthly chases in the Spanish speaking American Countries with existing SOTA associations in December 2019, with a total of 37 chases in the whole year 2019:

We hope this current increasing trend will consolidate and look forward to seeing many more in 2020.

Thanks for reading this news. I hope you found it of interest.

From Mark M0NOM
SOTA News from the Lake District

Lake District weather over the past couple of months has been a mixed bag - plenty of rain as always but also a light dusting of snow which always makes the mountains come alive!

My work has meant that my ability to chase from Windermere has been curtailed over the last few months so I’ve had to turn to the stats to get an accurate view. Averaging an activation every couple of days the most prolific activators at the end of 2019 were Neil @G0WPO followed by Chris @M0KPW then Jordan @M3TMX and Andy @G8CPZ. Andy’s progress has been remarkable following his move to the South Lakes, with lots of SOTA and WOTA activations packed into the last couple of months.

My last activation of 2019 on 29th Dec was a brief 2m affair with my newly acquired FT-817ND from Place Fell G/LD-027.

I’ve been on the lookout for another since migrating the Yahoo FT-817 group to groups.io - a group that has been going since 2000 with 11,000+ members!

Cousin George from Australia definitely felt alive having come from 44 degC in Australia to 3 degC and 60mph winds. Fortunately the 300m cloudbase cleared briefly for stunning views towards Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag and Fairfield, dappled in snow, making the trip perfect. Well, a stop at the Kirkstone Inn for a couple of pints ensured perfection!

Cousin George and Alex YL clinging on to Place Fell trig point

Special thanks to our dedicated chasers, including Sue @G1OHH, Douggie @G7CDA and John @G0TDM as well as our local activators always ready to return the favour from the shack. We are fortunate that 2m activations generally have enough chasers on tap that HF isn’t required. Place Fell proved how valuable this can be, with no chance of getting an HF antenna up in those winds!

Looking forward to both activating and chasing in the New Year, and getting up in the snow line when conditions permit. Our LD SOTA Weekend is now set for 2020 on June 20th-21st, I’m sure it will be as amazing as last year. Hopefully it will attract both a good mix of UK and overseas activators - we had so much fun in 2019!

Final editorial comment.
For most readers this reflector will seem to be entirly stable but from my perspective it is constantly changing. The Reflector is on a hosted site so we do not manage the updates- they just happen - sometimes transparently - sometimes more obvious. One change since the October news is that copying and pasting within the reflector seems to have improved significantly which has made my job of compiling this much easier.

It would be great to have some more contributors In particular with the fire devastation in Australia, it would be great to have at least one contributor from this area. :upside_down_face:

While Guru does give us a good perspective on Spanish speaking activity, I do hope we can someday have contributors from South America.

Till next quarter which will in fact be in four months as a consequence of our schedule change -

We’ve got activations in all EA call areas with the exception of EA9. imagen
EA2 is where we had the greatest number of activations to which contributed some activators arrived from EA4. Following are EA1, EA5, EA8, EA6, EA3 and EA7.
In EA1, among local activators, we also see contributors arrived from Portugal, EA2 and EA4.
In EA5, among the local activators, we see the contribution of an activator arrived from Belgium.
All activations in EA8 were carried out by colleagues arrived from abroad, i.e. Switzerland, Holland, Austria and Sweden.
Activations in EA6, among those by the local activators, counted with an important contribution by an activator arrived from the U.K. (Scotland).
Among the local EA3 activators, we also had the contribution of an activator arrived from Switzerland in this call area.
EA7 counted with a number of local activators and the contribution of activators arrived from Scotland and Switzerland.
Welcome all and thank you for the activations!

This is the monthly graph for 2018, 2019 and 2020 along with the monthly average in 2018 and 2019.

This is the monthly graph for 2018, 2019 and 2020 along with the monthly average in 2018 and 2019.

We had not activations in January 2018 and January 2020 is over 4 times the number of activations in January 2019. Very impressive, bravo!

Regarding the chasing activity, we see 12 chases from LU, 6 in LUD, 4 in LUQ and 2 in LUM.

We keep encouraging those chasers not doing it yet to register and upload their SOTA chases to the database.

This is the monthly activations graph for 2018, 2019 and 2020 together with the monthly average in 2018 and 2019:

January and February show higher numbers than any of the previous recorded months.

Here’s the graph for the chasers and number of chases in Spain:

The TOP 5 of the chasers in EA is: EA2DT, EA7GV, EA2IF, EA5K and EA1DHB. We see 95 different chaser callsigns. As usual, I encourage to all those not doing it yet to register and upload their chases onto the new SOTA database.

This is the graph of the monthly chases in 2019 and 2020 together with the average monthly number of chases in 2019:

Although February chases have reduced with respect to January’s, we still see a significantly higher number than that of last year.

=============================================================

With the information available in the database, this is the graph of the activations and activators in the Spanish speaking American Countries with existing SOTA associations in February 2020.

We see a total of 11 activations, 7 of which were in LUM (Mendoza-Argentina), 1 in TI and 3 in XE1. Thanks to all the activators!

This is the monthly activations graph for 2018, 2019 and 2020 together with the monthly average in 2018 and 2019:

We didn’t have any activation in February 2018 and we see in February 2020 more than double the activations in February 2019. Bravo!

Regarding the chasing activity, we see a total of 8 chases, 4 of which in LU and 4 in XE1. See the following graph:

Again, I encourage to all those not doing it yet to register and upload their chases onto the SOTA database.

This is the graph of the monthly chases in 2019 and 2020 together with the average monthly number of chases in 2019:

Although we see this month chases have significantly reduced with respect to the previous month, the number, although small, is much greater than that of the same month last year.

Thanks for reading this news. I hope you found it of interest.

SOTA Quarterly News May 2020

@G0CQK wrote:

Well here we are for the May Quarterly News except that this quarter has been four months, since we decided that there are too many things happening over year-end, so we decided to realign to a Feb, May, Aug, Nov sequence. The only issue is that all of our regular reporters are out of action since of the lockdown. The part of the world where most SOTA activity is still taking place is where we so far have no volunteer regular contributors viz. North America (any one up for it). So what we do have is a awards report from Barry @GM4TOE who amazingly managed to rise out of lockdown gloom to make the report below, and commentary on Spain from Guru @EA2IF

Any how a few musings from me which you might want to skip over in case you get bored.

Early in January a component of our reflector profile, alerted us that an update was needed. I hesitated before committing the update but it nagged on so I did it. It completely failed as we were still on Version 2.3.8 while the Discourse core had moved on to 2.4.0 where the update was contemporary - there was no way to make the update work with version 2.3.8. Our reflector is not running on a SOTA managed server but is currently hosted so we cannot manage the Discourse core updates. The result was the loss of the category column (in the middle of the screen) and the category to which a topic belonged was displayed immediately under its title. Several of our readers do not like that form of display and can get slightly vociferous about that but at the same time surprisingly no one commented about the changes by posting on the reflector. Maybe readers just didn’t notice or else passively accepted it as a software update.

Anyhow with help, guidance and code from the component author who I contacted via Discourse, I was able to re-build what is effectively the previous component version and the category column came back. Hopefully that will continue to work for some time in the future.

Simon @G4TJC who looks after the “linkfy” extension that causes your summit references to automatically acquire a URL link, without you having to, waited for a bit until he was sure it was OK before updating that component, which I am sure you will appreciate. I never have been able to master regular expressions such as he has compiled to make this work

Next we have a quite a strange issue. It is clear that in the current situation of wide spread lockdown there are many more people browsing the internet and there are some finding this reflector. Several of these immediately sign up even though the sign-up screen clearly indicates that the reflector is open for anyone to read, and of course all sign-ups are reviewed. (All sign-ups are checked against relevant databases such as the FCC, the ACMA, the RSGB, Indotel, SSA, Bundesnetzagentur e.t.c.) However, clearly from their profiles in various databases and even from Google that it is unlikely that they do actually have any interest in SOTA. What we have therefore is that of the latest new sign-ups, once approved, almost 55% have not reappeared and read any posts. Why did they sign up?

Another anecdotal fact is that the most error prone sign-ups are from English speakers. Most others whose native language is not English are meticulous in completing the sign-up form. Thankfully thanks to Guru @EA2IF and Toru @JH0CJH we do have appropriate language prompts in the sign-up form.

Right that has me been waffling on for long enough now for Barry GM4TOE’s Awards Report.

SOTA Awards January – April 2020

This report covers award claims for the period January to April 2020.

My apologies for not publishing earlier, many things complicated my life but back to whatever is normality now!

I would like to highlight a number of key achievements with DJ5AV achieving the amazing total of 200k Chaser points and HB9BIN activating 1000 summits. Other really amazing levels were achieved in the period but I will let the records speak for themselves.

VK3PF Peter Freeman 250 summits

First I must say a really big Thank You to all of you for the really generous level of donations made in the last few months. Starting this year I was starting to be concerned about continued funding for the SOTA IT facilities, however following an appeal to SOTA enthusiasts worldwide the funds are now at a level where we can certainly ensure continued access for these facilities throughout 2020 and almost certainly through 2021.

The current global pandemic has had a significant impact on SOTA operation with some countries stopping SOTA activations completely with their government lockdowns and severely restricting activity elsewhere in the World. This has, of course, had an impact on Award claims but the situation will improve and, hopefully, we all can get out onto the hills once again.

Just before the lockdown happened in the UK I had placed several orders to replace merchandise that was running low. Unfortunately many of these orders are severely delayed by the closure of businesses here so I will be unable to supply certain items once stock is depleted to zero. In addition I had intended to introduce some new branded merchandise, that too will have to wait until suppliers are, once again, back in business.

The recent increase in postal costs galvanised me into re-introducing the pdf versions of the Award certificates. They are charged at the same price as the printed version but are not subject to the expensive postal cost for a Large Letter from the UK. Several people have already taken advantage of this facility and I hope this will continue. Certain countries have very unreliable postal services so this will enable you to receive your certificate by email rather than regular mail (I recently had a certificate returned as undeliverable and checked the posting date: February 2019, it had taken a whole year to not get to the planned recipient!!!)

Stay safe on the hills – once you are able to get out!

Guru @EA2IF comments on when might we see some activations in Spain.

Spain’s Government President announced on Tuesday, April 28th the plan for easing the lockdown conditions and restrictions in place. There will be 5 different phases to be applied independently to our administrative divisions called provinces or to the individual islands.

Phases are 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4.

All Spain will enter Phase 0 on May 4th, with the exception of a few islands with no Covid-19 cases, EA8 isles of La Graciosa, La Gomera and El Hierro, as well as EA6 isle of Formentera will start directly Phase 1 which allows small business to open, from May 4th.

In Phase 0 we will be allowed to exercise individually which could include walking or cycling. However there will be conditions which will limit this activity:

1- Time frame:
People living in larger municipalities can do individual sport once a day either between 6h and 10h in the morning or between 20h and 23h in the evening (local). These time slots don’t apply to people living in municipalities with population under 5000 inhabitants who will be allowed to exercise at any time of the day.

2- Range of movements: movements will only be allowed within the regionty of residence, being this condition applicable to all people, no matter the size of the town or municipality where they inhabit.

With these conditions, I still see some chances for SOTA activations in EA during this Phase 0, as for example, we will be able to go cycling to a mountain base and hike to the top on foot or cycling, and carry out a SOTA activation, as long as we don’t leave the territory of our home municipality.

Only in Phase 2 will we be allowed to drive our car within the limits of our home province or isle of residency for things like going to a distant SOTA for an activation.

With this good news, we should be seeing SOTA activations in EA from May 4th onwards, carried out by those activators living at a walking or cycling distance of a SOTA summit located within the municipality of residency.

For any one interested, comprehensive details of the plan can be found at https://www.spainenglish.com/2020/05/06/lifting-lockdown-spain-full-details-phases/

So that is that for this quarter but please regard this in the current climate as a do-it-yourself news. Please feel free to add anything from the past 4 months to this news that you wish to share to the SOTA community and if you do manage to contribute, why not decide to become a regular contributor and let me know. In expectation that by the beginning of August we may actually have enough activity to report, be safe everyone. Watch this space!

The August 2020 Quarterly News is due to be published to the reflector soon, hopefully some time early next week. As usual I can only compile whatever is submitted so if nothing is, then no news will appear, so this is a call for submissions. Have you any newsworthy items that you would like included in the August 2020 Quarterly SOTA News. I appreciate that because of Covid-19 restrictions activity has been a bit lower but maybe you have something you would like to share that you didn’t want to post as a topic on its own, but is still worth sharing. Please let me have any thing that I may include in the August 2020 Quarterly SOTA News.

We still have not had any regular contributors south of the Equator so far so if you are interesting in doing so on a quarterly basis please let me know.

Please note that if you receive this as an email from the reflector then you cannot reply by email as it goes nowhere. You need to message me directly via a PM or if you prefer via email to my email address as per QRZ

Importantly if you have something to be added to the August 2020 Quarterly News, do not post it as as reply to this otherwise it will be instantly seen by everyone here and will no longer be news.

Welcome to the August 2020 edition of the SOTA News. At this time, with the Covid-19 pandemic still having some effect on activity, I hope that everyone stays safe, as lockdown eases or even retreats in some instances as I am hearing as a write on the TV News this evening about VK3. For contributions: thanks to Tim G4YBU, Ken G0FEX, Ignacio EA2BD, Luc ON7DQ, Barry GM4TOE, Allan GW4VPX
and Etienne K7ETN who allowed me to filch items from Gabor VE7JH, Jim KK7A and
Bill WA7NCL out of the Pacific Northwest newsletter.

First some disappointing news from Elliot K6EL
The Covid-19 virus has caused postponement of the ninth annual free SOTA lunch at Pacificon, originally set for October of this year. The new date is October 16, 2021, again at Pacificon, in California.
Elliott, K6EL

Next we take a look at the SOTA contribution towards Covid-19 research and also the contribution of other Radio Amateur teams

Radio Amateurs, Covid-19 and Folding@Home

Around the end of May, some of us became aware of an effort to use distributed computing, where people lend some of their CPU and GPU resource for analysis of Covid-19 via an app called Folding@Home. Once you install the app it can use your computer to download analyses called Work Units from the Washington State University in St. Louis and process them using both your CPU and GPU, then return the results - you have to do nothing - the app does is all… In fact your GPU contributes more than your CPU. Once the app is running your computer fans will work harder and with laptops, you have to be careful about the core temperature. I use a laptop cooling pad with 6 fans to manage mine. You have the ability to control just how much of your computer resource the app can use. After a few posts to the reflector we set up a Summits On The Air team. At that time the effort had already been going from some time there were over 2 million contributors and over 200 thousand teams. Our team membership increased steadily and with advice from the SOTA president, G3WGV who was already contributing as part of the Club Log team, we were able maximise our effort. The team has grown to currently 34 members and has gradually climbed through the team tables reaching 1202 of 254484 teams and has achieved 288,425,500 credit points in the process.

image
Visualization of the analysis in progress

Radio Amateurs are making a major contribution to the Folding@Home effort with many teams. A significant Amateur Radio contributor team is Club Log users - Amateur Radio which has achieved 1,426,282,903 credit points reaching 368 of 254484 teams. In that team the SOTA president who had already started contributing before our team started has achieved 458,814,261 credit points about 32% of the team total.

Another team is Ham Radio Operators which has achieved 2,360,485,963 credit points and is at 230 of 254484 teams and may be the largest contributor of amateur radio teams. Others include Do Something Amateur Radio Club, Amateur Radio Community, Amateur Radio - HAMS, Amateur Radio Operators for the cure, Irish Radio Amateurs who are smaller contributors than our team.

What is mildly interesting is to read the individual efforts to which you are contributing which to me are unintelligible such as "This project simulates the non-structural-protein 13 (NSP13) Helicase of SARS-CoV-2 to study how it interacts with viral RNA. Helicases act on the viral genome, made of RNA, and are useful for the viral replication and transmission. This project hopes to study the helicase NSP14 and identify potential hidden druggable pockets. " Well if you understand that you are way ahead of me.

If there are still people who would like to contribute and join our team, please register using your call sign and search for Summits On The Air in the teams list. It is team number 265845.
The numbers above were recorded this morning 4th August and will be changing constantly

From Luc ON7DQ
The OST Morse Box

While not a direct SOTA topic, the issue of “learning CW” has popped up on the Reflector every now and then, so this homebrew project may interest some of you …

When I started SOTA in 2014, all my QSO’s were HF SSB or 2m FM. Soon I discovered that I was missing out on half of the fun (and possibly S2S points !), and I decided to brush up my CW skills.
What helped me a lot was the regular CW practice sessions in my local club, and becoming a member of the SKCC in 2016.
At present, about 50% of my QSO’s are in CW.

My local club in Ostend, Belgium is the OST branch of the UBA.
We have a small group of people that hold a weekly CW practice session on the local club frequency in the 2m band.

Some years ago, I had the idea to build a Morse Box , to be able to have ‘Tone CW’ practice and QSO’s on the 2m band, using FM mode. So I made a prototype in breadboard style, and it worked OK, but was not a project that others could easily copy. After a while, I had other projects on my mind, and so the Morse Box got in the background …

Until this year !
While we were in full Covid-19 lockdown, I called in some help from a fellow club member Gilbert, ONL12523 , who is a keen designer and programmer, and this is what he came up with:

This is the block diagram:

It’s a versatile circuit that you can fit between the microphone and the microphone input of any transceiver. It was mainly designed for use with a VHF/UHF transceiver, but can be used for many other purposes.

By using an inexpensive Arduino Nano the following functions are available (it is a LONG list!):

  • DDS Tone-Generator in software, for a perfectly pure sine wave
  • Microphone is switched off while transmitting CW to avoid disturbing background noise
  • Automatic activation of the transceiver PTT
  • Adjustable DELAY for the PTT, from 0.5 … 10 seconds
  • Variable CW speed of 10 … 35 words per minute (WPM)
  • OLED display to read the set parameters and texts
  • Keying with Straight Key, Paddle or a built-in Touch Paddle!
  • Paddle polarity settable to NORMAL / REVERSE
  • Built-in “Keep Alive” circuit for use with a Power Bank
  • Adaptable to all existing transceivers, using the appropriate microphone plugs. The basic model is based on the widely distributed RJ-45 connectors
  • Power via the USB connection of the Arduino, via the microphone jack or from an external power supply
  • Use as a separate electronic keyer for transceivers without a built-in keyer
  • Random CW generator , display characters in the serial monitor and on the OLED display.
  • Beacon function , can also be used as a memory keyer (1 memory of 80 characters).
  • Additional functions can be set via AT commands via the serial monitor
  • Entering and transmitting text via the serial monitor
  • Windows program for controlling the OST Morse Box (then no need for the Arduino IDE)
  • Built-in TEST function for touch paddle

There is 32 page manual in DUTCH and ENGLISH , which was my input to the project. A French manual is coming up as well.
(I still need a German translator … anyone ?)

It describes all functions and detailed building instructions, from building a very basic circuit to the full option Morse Box.

All files needed for making the PCB are on github (see link at the bottom). Make it yourself, order it from a local manufacturer, or order them cheaply in China (send me a mail for more info). You can also change the PCB to your liking, it was developed with the free edition of DipTrace (https://diptrace.com/).

We ordered 10 PCB’s in China, but they have all been sold to local club members, and we don’t intend to order any more. But Victor GI4ONL has also ordered 10, so he may have some left over, send him a PM if interested.

Versatility: not all options are mandatory, those who wish to do so, can partially fill the PCB to obtain only the desired functions. This is clearly indicated in the construction manual.
(If you wish, you could even build the basic version without the PCB, just build it on a breadboard)

This is what the full option PCB looks like. External components not shown are an OLED display, speaker, touch paddle contacts, LED’s and some buttons and switches.
And your own straight key or paddle of course!

image

The “jumper block” to the right must be wired according to the microphone pinout of your transceiver. Transceivers with round (8 pin etc) connectors have to be wired to the pads near the 16-pin socket, omitting the RJ-45 connectors.

The relay in the picture was a special model for the first prototypes, but the PCB has been adapted since, for a more common relay type.

All code and documentation files are on my github page: https://github.com/on7dq/OST-Morse-Box

SOTA Complete

SV2RUJ Stavros Triantafilloy 100 summits

The current global pandemic has had a significant impact on SOTA operation but, hopefully, the gradual easing of restrictions will see more folk out and about activating. The key factor being to keep fit and to avoid catching or spreading this horrendous disease.

A decision by the USA administration to dramatically increase their charges for handling international mail means that the USA now has a World postal charging zone all of its own – it is now the most expensive place in the World to send merchandise. Unfortunately this was introduced without any advance warning by Royal Mail and caught me by surprise when I visited the Post Office last week. SOTA has absorbed the increase in charges for packages sent then but I have had to dramatically increase the cost of postage to the USA for the second time this year. Small items are not significantly affected (e.g. certificates) but once the package includes any real weight – ouch!!!

I am looking into using courier services (Fedex, UPS etc.) to see if I can resolve this but you might consider pairing up with somebody near to you when ordering to take advantage of these services. More information once I find out if it is practicable.

A few months ago I asked for ideas of other branded merchandise we could provide One suggestion was taken forward and an order placed. The Coronavirus struck and deliveries stopped. I now have had a partial shipment so I will be able to offer what are apparently called “snoods” branded with the SOTA logo – hillwalkers amongst us will be more aware of this product under an alternative tradename: Buff ®. If you need face covering, a neck warmer, a head covering then this is the product for you! Currently available with a microfleece section and microfibre main section, I will get these onto the shopping site just as soon as I can get some photos.

Finally, I am still having difficulties purchasing some replacement stock. Manufacturers are still not making in the quantities needed by the wholesalers so I have to wait my turn to get embroidered product. It will sort itself out but, meanwhile, my apologies if the colour or style you want is not in stock.

That is it for this quarter – stay safe on the hills and keep away from anybody carrying that infernal virus

SOTA Story from VE7-land from Gabor VE7JH

Since my plans to enter the CQ-WPX-SSB Contest at the end of March at VE7UF’s QTH had fallen by the wayside due to COVID-19, I decided to activate some summits that I have never visited before. Here on Vancouver Island I thought I’d choose some easy ones because the weather was rather dreary and showers were forecast.

I spent Saturday near Langford, BC and visited Mount Wells VE7/CL-011 and Mount McDonald VE7/CL-015. These summits can be attacked from the same parking lot and they each take only about an hour to ascend. It was raining on and off so once on the summit I just stuck to 2m-FM and had no problem making a half a dozen contacts with chasers in Victoria area.
Both mountains have easy to follow trails that are quite well maintained. If one has a half a day to kill in the area they make for a perfect two-fer.

On Sunday I visited Mount Work VE7/CL-010 (pictured below) and Partridge Hills VE7/CL-020 in the Saanich/Highlands area. Both and are situated within parks and have well-maintained trails. There were a fair number of hikers around but finding a quiet spot in the activation zone was no problem. I just operated 2m-FM from CL-010, but once I summited CL-020 the sun came out and the winds eased up so I was able to set up my 20m CW gear and worked a handful of USA stations along with DJ5AV, EA7GV and ZL1BYZ.

image
There is great 2m FM simplex activity in the Capital Region (that’s what the “CL” stands for) and US stations across the water are easily reachable too. One should have no problem making the required four QSOs from any of these summits with just a 2m HT and an aftermarket antenna. I have now have activated 31 different summits but there is still plenty to go!

Jim-K7MK – Idaho’s Newest Mountain Goat! by Jim-KK7A

On April 18th 2020 at 20:36 UTC Jim Cullum, K7MK completed his fourth QSO from Kodiak Peak (W7I/SR-167) and became Idaho’s second ever Mountain Goat! And not just MG on that day – it was also his birthday! See the banner photo for this newsletter for the view from his MG summit…

Jim’s quest began five years earlier on this same peak with his first ever SOTA activation. Obviously, he enjoys the hobby and after five years and 218 activations he achieved his goal. During his SOTA career Jim has activated US summits in Idaho, Arizona, Massachusetts, Vermont, Utah, Oregon, California, Washington, and South Dakota. He also took advantage of some business trips to Germany and activated summits there. There are numerous “first activations” in Jim’s SOTA career – often involving bushwhacking up Idaho’s all too common trail-less summits. More than once Jim aborted summit quests when the brush got too thick and the planned for route just was not going to work. About 70% of his activations and 60% of his points came from his home state of Idaho.

When Jim started his Mountain Goat campaign, he was exclusively an SSB operator. A year later he made some initial QSY’s into the CW world. This was also during the ARRL’s National-Parks-On-The-Air program and for both NPOTA and SOTA, CW is a most useful mode. Within a few months, by the fall of 2016, Jim was operating exclusively in CW, a mode he continues today. Chasers will hear him flying along at 20+ words per minute – they better be ready to hear their callsign come back over the airways.

And, of course, Jim could not have achieved Mountain Goat without dedicated chasers following him to summits. Across the almost 5,000 QSOs Jim logged from summits in the past five years there were six operators who worked him more than 100 times. These were: WØMNA (157), WØERI (156), W7RV (124), KK7A (118), N4EX (108), and NS7P (108).

Jim is already off and working on his second Mountain Goat. He is borrowing some from KR7RK’s playbook down in Arizona. Longer activations with bigger antennas and more power across more bands and

Rich-AC7MA becomes another W7W MG! by Bill-WA7NCL

Rich has been an outdoors enthusiast for many years. He hiked and climbed extensively in the 80’s and 90’s. I met Rich through work in the late 90s and found he was a fellow ham. I encouraged him to get a station going and he became a regular with my small Field Day group. We also did a few VHF contests together as a portable station.

Rich is well known for his contributions to many of the Elecraft products including the K3/K3S, KX3, and KX2. His SOTA setup consists of a KX2 with integrated key, internal tuner and battery. He has a link dipole that he has designed with a twisted pair feed line and collapsible fiberglass pole. The system deploys amazingly fast and he has an extremely effective system that works well on 40 thru 15 meters.

In 2017 - Rich and I introduced Josh-WU7H to SOTA with a July trip to Tinkham Peak. The trip was not an ideal SOTA initiation and Rich bunged up his knee which reduced the SOTA output for the rest of the summer.

In 2018 - Rich retired from Elecraft and his SOTA numbers jumped tremendously. Spring saw his first winter bonus peak. July featured a one-day marathon to Pechugh, Kelly Butte, Sawmill Ridge, and Colquhoun Peak and a three-day trip to the Entiat and Tyee Ridge. The later trip featured a plague of yellow jackets and a windy night near Tyee Mountain.

In 2019 - Rich and I made a made a five-day July expedition to seven peaks on the Columbia Crest. This included first activations of W7W/ FR-009 Midnight Mountain, FR-010 King Mountain, FR-021 Graves Mountain, and FR-007 White Mountain. Also notable were two summer “death march” day hikes to Thomas Mountain and Rock Mountain.

image

In 2020 - the Coronavirus made SOTA peaks difficult in the spring. Rich discovered the Campbell Global forest lands outside of Snoqualmie and made many trips to the lowland peaks there using a combination of hiking and biking. After the shutdown was lifted, he made an expedition back to the Entiat Ridge peaks and achieved his Mountain Goat there

Willamette Valley S2S Party – On 20 June SIXTEEN Activators on ELEVEN summits worked through all S2S permutations in an hour! And the rain nearly stopped (for most of us). No amazing DX with all summits in Oregon, but it was fun and a good way to kick off summer. Below are photos of Etienne-K7ATN on Bald Peak and Troy-KF7SEY on Dorn Peak.

Radio Tales from Wales by Allan GW4VPX

Due to slightly different Covid-19 lockdown policies Wales was the last nation in the UK to allow free movement and it was wonderful to hear voices on my VHF and UHF radios transmitted once again from the hills and mountains in Wales.

Many activators have once again taken up their quest to reach Mountain Goat with many making their muscles ache with some really challenging climbs activating quite a few SOTA summits on a daily basis. One of these is Richard M1HAX who camped for 3 nights NW of Capel Curig so that he could focus on the high pointers around the Ogwen valley and Snowdon and may I add at a breathtaking speed……MG before Christmas Richard?

Another activator who is nearing his Mountain Goat goal is Philip G4HQB and could be heard from the mountains of North and Mid Wales as soon as lockdown was lifted. His XYL Gillian 2E0OVW has also been by his side on many occasions and gradually adding to her SOTA activation points.

Rod M0JLA and Viki M6BWA have just completed a week of SOTA activations in North Wales and it was great to get them in my log from every summit and also s2s on one day when I ventured out myself for the second time after lockdown. The day I was on GW/MW-029 Hafod Ithel I was called by David GW0EVV/p for a summit to summit on 2m. David had just activated GW/NW-001 Snowdon using CW and completed his Three Peaks CW challenge…thank you and well done David.

Made sure I was comfortable on my second summit after lockdown…Hafod Ithel GW/MW029 (pic…GW4VPX)

As I mentioned before it’s not very often I get the Lake District from West Wales (160 miles?) but my 5 element beam once again pulled in Mark M0NOM/p on the Old Man of Coniston G/LD- 013. He was using his handheld with a Diamond RH770 telescopic whip antenna which is an effective antenna as I also logged Andy G8CPZ/p on Loughrigg Fell G/LD-047 a week earlier using the same antenna on his handheld radio. These are great antennas but beware that there are cheap imitations out there…I had one and it broke on its second activation….

It was great to hear a young voice calling from GW/NW-011 Arenig Fawr. It was newly licensed Alice M7SQT/p who along with her father Alistair M0TYM/p were activating the group of SOTA summits East of Trawsfynydd. Congratulations Alice on your new callsign.

Roger Dallimore MW0IDX (Region Manager for Wales) has started a new Facebook group entitled GW SOTA (Summits on the Air)

If you are venturing on to the hills and mountains of Wales please send me a brief report and especially some pictures of your activation so that I can include them here.

From EA2BD Ignacio
VHF FM Long distance SOTA activation 2020:

We, SOTA activators, have plenty of fun and joy when preparing and doing a mini expedition to operate portable on a mountain top.

But motivation rises up even further when we operate for a special event. This year, the second in a row, a group of EA hams and SOTA friends made a plan and invited others to join a special activity that took place last July 25th, focusing on a multiple summit activation on VHF FM.

We had the following targets:

  • Favouring VHF FM contacts trying to cover long distances.
  • Promoting the use of VHF band for which many hams have radio gear available, which are, however, very much underused nowadays.
  • Spreading knowledge of the SOTA scheme and showing how activating SOTA can be started using low powered simple gear and small sized antennas, while having a lot of fun.
  • Involving new amateurs by inviting them to chase us and attracting them into SOTA.
  • Suggesting participants to go out to elevated areas in the outdoors to improve their signal coverage towards the summits being activated in this event.
  • Checking and learning about VHF propagation in praxis, to be aware of the influence of elevation, radiated power, the kind of antenna and the effect of the sea.

We had been preparing this event for weeks in advance, by identifying the proper summits with best potential to provide long distance QSOs in various SOTA associations in EA and also F. Then we assigned frequencies to the activators to try to minimize interference and give them better chances to be chased. Then, we finally published the plan in the SOTA reflector and in other ham forums inviting all to join this event.

The activity finally took place on July 25th, as scheduled. We are very happy with the achieved results; there were many participants.

We are still collecting and analyzing all logs and I will soon publish a detailed report with the relevant data, but I can now provide some highlights in advance:

  • 35 summits were activated simultaneously (twice as much as in last year’s event!)
  • Long distance QSOs up to 500Km were achieved within EA and some even longer distances across the sea reaching TK, IS0, EA8 and F.
  • Several non frequent SOTA chasers participated from home or traveled to elevated areas in the outdoors to chase us. The VHF FM portion of the band was crowded for several hours during the event.
  • SOTA activators achieved higher qso rates than usual in VHF and got many S2S qso.
  • Many operators, who didn’t know much about SOTA, have now shown some interest on this scheme and want to get involved into it.

QSO map for EA3BV, as a sample of working chasers in many directions:

As stated, detailed results will be published after analysing the logs.

The response to this event was excellent generating a good echo in the ham community.

We will keep on doing such events in the future to have fun, help spreading SOTA and to attract new hams.

EA2BD Ignacio

From G0FEX Ken
I thought it was about time I should send something in for Sota News.

I would like to thank all the activators that make Sota such a fun hobby, without you we would have nothing, so keep up the great activity.

Sadly I am getting the impression that a few chasers consider this to be a competition, I look upon Sota as a hobby and a fun thing to do, my own thoughts are, what I do not contact today I can always contact tomorrow.

image

Over the years that I have been chasing Sota I have made many good radio friends and it is always a pleasure to contact them when they are on the summits, the most important thing is enjoy the hobby and be safe.

Hopefully in the very near future when things get back to some normality, I will activate my local summit G/CE-004 at present the schools are on holiday, so I will do this once they re-open when there is less chance lots of people being around.

I would like to thank all the Management Team for all the work they do, I for one do appreciate what they do, and finally, very well done to all activators that have reached MG status this year, Congratulations to all.

From Rob G0HRT Associations Manager.

EA7 AM changes

Arturo EA7KE has indicated that he would wish to resign from the role as SOTA Association Manager for EA7 association. His work in support of SOTA has been much appreciated over the years and he has proposed Jose EA7GV to take over from him.

Jose has accepted the EA7 association role and will also look after the EA7 regions as Arturo did.

There are no urgent updates foreseen for EA7 by the new manager except for updating ARM and database.

Thanks to Guru EA2IF for his assistance in this matter and our best wishes go to him for recovery in health in the very near future.
