SOTA AWARDS OCTOBER 2017 from Barry GM4TOE - SOTA Awards Manager.

October provided another large number of award claims which, as seems to be usual, arrived as a batch early in the month and then a second batch late in the month. Congratulations to husband and wife team KB1RJC and KB1RJD and to Phil VK2JDL on reaching Mountain Goat. The Chasers provided some firsts with DL1FU on 150k points (always a gentleman on the key slowing down to the Activator's speed without fail), S52CU with 50k Chaser points, a Mountain Goat and a Platinum S2S claim all in the same month; also AC1Z on 25k points and DD0VE and DL4TO on 10k points. Also of note are EA2DNO and EA2DCA who managed to achieve Platinum Mountain Explorer awards.

Well done to all claimants, high scoring or new entrants, this facet of our hobby offers a wide range of opportunities for all participants.

Once again I have run out of Mountain Goat trophy blanks but these are on-order and the manufacturer should have them with me in about a week.

Now my favourite gripe – the folk who cannot be bothered to check their logs before ordering awards. Once again I have been faced with orders for awards where the date of qualification has either been put as the order date or, even worse, just the current year when it is blatantly obvious that the award stretches back over a number of years. I can understand that establishing the actual award date for Mountain Hunter or Mountain Explorer is not immediately obvious but the general Chaser and Activator awards (and their variants) can be easily established in a few minutes by simply downloading your relevant log as a csv (comma separated variable) file, opening it in any of the spreadsheet programs that reside on the vast majority of computers and checking the score against the date. If I can do it you can do it so why do some people expect me to do the work for them?

Many of you will be aware that I started a poll about proposed new merchandise items to try to establish what I should be stocking into the coming year. Ideally I would like to stock everything but when you consider the range of sizes (and colours) that I have to hold, and the initial cost, I have to be pragmatic. The general view was that personalised name badges and full zip fleeces would be of interest so I have put the wheels in motion to stock the fleeces and arrange for samples of the badges to be produced prior to making them available to order. I anticipate these will be added to the shopping site in the next few weeks. Further stock will be purchased when funds permit so I may well run another poll in the new year to establish what else might be of interest – thank you one and all for your input, it definitely made the decisions easier.

Following on from the acquisition of new stock I am planning some enhancements to the shopping website to make ordering easier AND to provide me with better stock control records (with forewarning of potential out-of-stock items). One enhancement I am planning is to allow people to personalise their certificates and trophies; in the past if you wanted different or additional wording you had to email me with your requirements and I had to amend the database so that you could order. In future this will be a feature you can add at the time of ordering. Other changes are also planned and I hope to announce these in my next monthly report.

I am planning a visit to EA8 in December so if you want awards and/or merchandise before late December you will have to place your orders no later than 21 November and for trophies in the first week of November (by 7 November at the absolute latest). I will not close the shop but I shall be away from 30 November until 18 December and that is very close to the last posting date for Christmas delivery.

Please stay safe on the hills

Greetings from Canada, US, Mexico, Central America, Greenland, and most of the Caribbean. It seems like October just flew by. The ARRL Sweepstakes [CW], sort of the granddaddy of NA contests, will be upon us on 4-5 Nov which for me signals the real beginning of winter. Still waiting to hear news from the rumored XE Association...

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS: At the very beginning of October, Merle, KB1RJD, and Herm, KB1RJC, made it into Mountain Goat status. Merle is the third female MG in North America and is the first east of the Mississippi River. Additionally, they are the 3rd North American couple to enter "Goatdom." It is believed that they are also the oldest, they report their ages as "North of 80." Should anyone wish to challenge that claim, we can arrange a "Fact Check."

EVENT REPORTS/PLANS: We had several events and gatherings of the NA SOTA Community in October:

Elliott, K6EL,reports: "Twenty SOTA folks, tried and true, gathered October 21st for the sixth annual SOTA lunch at Pacificon. Show and tell was supplied by K6EL and by Elecraft chief designer N6KR, who brought his new antenna and soft case for the KX2. He discussed keyer paddle improvements and on-board logging for that transceiver, in addition to data mode pluses and minuses. He also revealed that logging might come to the KX3. Elecraft discounts were available to attendees, as well as sections of very light weight 300 ohm twin-lead. People were surprised at the small size of the glass SOTA trophy shown by K6EL. Everyone commented about how nice it is to see the faces behind the microphones, and everyone vowed to return next year."

N6KR

[Thanks to Oleh, KD7WPJ, for the photos]

Dean, K2JB, reported on the W4G North Georgia SOTA Campout Weekend: "Earlier this year, Ryan, WG4I (ex. KK4OSG) put forth the idea of having a SOTA Campout in the North Georgia area sometime in October. The W4G/NG region just happens to have numerous SOTA summits close to a centrally located campground, so plans were made and queries send out to local activators."

"On Oct 19-22, WG4I, KI4SVM, WH6LE, KI4TN, K1LIZ, KM4JKM, KJ4RSW, KN4BEV, and K2JB all participated in the 1st W4G/NG SOTA Campout. The airwaves were definitely radio active during those days. Chasers surely had their dials turning getting to all the spots. Among the participants, we logged 43 activations, 156 S2S QSOs, 26 Completes, 276 Earned Activator Points and 838 total QSOs. Several activations were qualified with at least the first QSOs being S2S! WG4I had one activation with 8 S2S QSOs. KM4JKM and KN4BEV were first-time activators both scoring S2S contacts. KI4SVM, K2JB and WG4I even managed night-time activations."

"We were all very busy every day but were able to relax in front of a big campfire in the evening with good food, good beverage and good stories about the day’s activations. WX could not have been better as we had SEVERE CLEAR conditions on the summits. The numbers convinced us that we’ve hit upon a good formula for feeding our SOTA addiction as well as a way to introduce SOTA to newcomers. So, stay tuned for the next W4 SOTA Campout which is already being planned."

"A thousand thanks to all the faithful chasers who, even though they had already worked a particular summit that day, jumped right in the pileups to give all of us activators that thrill of the chase. Photos can be seen at https://flic.kr/s/aHsm4VspyS "

Also from Oleh, KD7WPJ: "WC6J, K6KNS, and myself, KD7WPJ, activated KU6J Memorial Peak. It was nothing special in this activation, except that we did it during CW WW SSB Contest. It was a challenge for K6KNS to make minimum 4 contacts, using phone. He was lucky to make one contact with beginner KM6HMQ on 2 m FM. Then we saw spot on SOTAWatch from K7ORG, who was on SSB on 20 meter from Sardine Peak just 17 miles from us. He was very impressed when all three of us made S2S QSOs with him. Finally two of us walked down ridge to be outside of activation zone and added two more contacts to K6KNS log on 2m FM."

[Ed Note: W6/NS-204, located near Truckee CA, was dedicated as "KU6J Memorial Peak" following the death of Eric June, KU6J]

And in the Event Plans department ... from Keith, KK7RK: "The Oro Valley Amateur Radio Club will hold their annual hamfest on Saturday, November 11. I was thinking it might be fun to have an informal SOTA ops meetup there? Anybody interested? See http://www.tucsonhamradio.org/hamfest "

"The hamfest is held right off the I-10 freeway in Marana so it's super easy access from Phoenix and Tucson. If you're looking for a nearby peak to the hamfest, I think the closest may be Safford Peak (aka "the Sombrero"), W7A/PE-088."

NEWS: Elliott, K6EL, noted, "Like nearly all issues of QST the past 18 months, there are references to SOTA in multiple places in the November issue. K1ZK's set-up on W1/DI-004 is on page 61. A pic of KH2TJ on peak in Glacier National Park is on page 90."

REPTILES: With the increasing SOTA activity, it is easy to forget that outdoor activities have their hazards and risks. This from John, K1JD: "As you have read, Fred [KT5X] and I had quite an adventure last week. Red Mesa activation involves an 8 mile RT hike on uneven ground with loose rock and cacti. We were about 2 miles in when Fred was bitten by a small prairie rattlesnake. Statistically about 25% of snake bites are “dry” which means no venom is injected but those are poor odds. There were only two viable choices: calling 911 or hiking out."

"We knew that most snakes around here, prairie rattler included have hemotoxic venom. The occasional Green Mojave rattlesnake found in this part of NM is the exception: it's venom is neurotoxic which attacks the central nervous system and would therefore require calling 911. Far away from public roads, this amounts to betting one’s survival on the timely arrival of a Life Star helicopter. With the Prairie rattler, we figured we had more time to act and chose to hike out. It took nearly an hour to get back to my truck. Maybe it was the best decision, maybe not."

"Having decided to hike out, the next question was how to mitigate the effects of the bite. We’ve all seen enough Western movies to know what you're supposed to do when a rattlesnake bites you: apply a tourniquet to isolate the bite from the bloodstream, cut around the wound and suck out the poison. NO! For hemotoxic venom, the poison will reduce platelets dramatically so one could bleed to death and the isolated tissue on the bite side of the tourniquet could become necrotic and need to be amputated. You can try to suck out the poison using one of those REI pumps but it won’t help. Buy something else at REI."

"I had taken a few photographs of the snake that the ER Doc and staff found interesting. However, it’s unclear whether this information assisted poison control in formulating the antivenin treatment. It was definitely a “cocktail" of several types. I was unaware that anti venom today is mostly powdered and has a much longer shelf life. That’s on the plus side; on the negative it took over 30 minutes to mix and get it into the saline bag for the IV. The dosage was very carefully calculated. The first antivenin treatment was one of 4 over 2 days."

"Please take this opportunity to read up on snakebites, there are many articles on the Web that you'll find informative. Snakes are one of many risks that activators take because we believe the probabilities associated with them are small. Maybe so, but obviously they are not zero. Another good idea is to hike with a buddy especially when going into remote areas. Life or limb could depend on it."

That will do it for October's report from the New World. Please activate safely, take a buddy if possible, leave an itinerary and schedule with someone, and be aware of dangers around you.

SOTA NEWS FROM JAPAN by Toru JH0CJH

October 2017, it was a miserable month indeed. Out of 31 days in October, 23 days were rainy days in Tokyo and 10 days out of 23 days were torrential rain, Really miserable for mountaineers! Accordingly fewer activations have been made although October is the best season for hiking in Japan.
However the numner of QSO’s per activation has increased. Perhaps huge numbers of fanatic activators push up the number of QSO’s.

In October the following number of activations have been made.

SOTA activities in October 2017 in Japan as of 31 October 2017.

Activation

Total 133 Activations with 1959 QSO have been made and reported. Activation numbers are still high like last month, but other than JA
regions activity is lower. Perhaps the reason is weather the conditions.

JA: 125 activations with 1919 QSO from Summits
JA5: 3 activations with 13 QSO from Summits
JA6: 1 activation with 4 QSO from Summits
JA8: 4 activations with 23 QSO from Summits

Chasing

Total 270 Chasing QSO have been made and reported.

JA: 249 chasing QSO
JA5: 1 chasing QSO
JA6: 20 chasing QSO
JA8: 0

There was a plan of VK/ZL/JA <> EU S2S Event on 21 Oct 17, however bad weather caused by a typhoon jeopardized our plan of action. However some brave SOTA lovers made activations under severe conditions. Two such fanatic SOTA lovers JI1IHV and JI1UPL made an activation from Minoyama
JA/ST-017. Good Job! Hira san.

On 13, 14 October, Andrew VK3ARR returned to Japan! He had a business trip to
Korea HL and dropped off a couple of days in Japan. He arrived on Thursday
and he flew to Shikoku Isl JA5, Kagawa prefecture for activation from Mt.
Kiyama JA5/KA-015.

Andrew VK3ARR

Surprisingly he came back to Tokyo within a day and had a party in
Akihabara, famous as Electric city. We enjoyed in Shabu-Shabu restaurant
again in Akihabara with Hira san JI1IHV, Leo JI1UPL, Andrew JI1GBE/VK3ARR,
me JH0CJH and JM1NCT Aki san (from left side).

Next day, he flew to Hokkaido JA8 and made an activation from JA8/OM-038 Mt
Kijibikiyama. By this success of activation he made all 4 JA SOTA
association activations. Congratulations.

ON SOTA Winter Activation Day – Peter ON4UP

Dear SOTA participants,

Slowly we are getting towards the end of our 10-year ON association celebration year. A lot of special 10-year ON association awards have already been issued. In order to end this great year I propose we do it with a big bang: The first ON-SOTA-winter activation day on Sunday 17 December 2017!

You are kindly invited to participate by activating, chasing and making summit-2-summit contacts as much as you can with the focus on Belgian SOTA-summits.

This day will be the ideal opportunity to:

  • activate those missing ON summits to get the 10-year ON association activator award

  • chase those missing ON summits to get the 10-year ON association chaser award

  • go for the 10-year ON association complete award

  • provide the necessary contacts for international SOTA chasers so that they can get the 10-year ON association chaser award

  • make ON summit2summit contacts on 2m

  • activate in rain, snow but most probably in sunshine …

  • have a lot of SOTA-fun!

Remember that you can get a 3-point winter bonus for ON SOTA summits with 6 or 8 points … even if you already have activated that summit during the summer!

73, Peter – ON4UP

The revisions to the SOTA shopping site have been on-trial for most of November and I think most of the bugs have been ironed-out. I hope the new layout, with fly-out help notes, makes the site more user friendly. There are a couple of new products now available – a very heavyweight fleece with embroidered logo and personalised name badges - both seem to have met with approval by purchasers. The biggest change is the method for ordering trophies (and to a lesser extent, certificates) Trophies are now priced as the un-engraved blank which has just the SOTA logo sand blasted into the back side, you are now able to specify exactly what other information you would like to appear – date format and other information. Beware though, the charge for engraving is per character so the cost of engraving a full date such as “28 November 2017” is much more than the traditional “2017” and is a nightmare to fit onto the blank. I removed the fly-out calendar after several orders were made for the order date rather than the date that the award was achieved; if they are obviously wrong then I try to catch them before going out for engraving but once engraved you have to live with it – CHECK, then double Check please.

Another question I have been asked is “What does a product look like in another colour?” If you proceed through the order process choosing size (where you will find what is in stock in your size, if appropriate) then colour, the image will change to show you a photo of the actual product – clever yes!

Over the years I have had a few parcels get lost in the post and other folks have asked for a tracking number. The facility to pay for a tracked (and signed-for) service has been added to the shopping site and I would encourage people paying for high cost items to consider paying for a tracked, rather than un-tracked service. I can track an item within the UK but once it is on a plane to another country I am unable to track a parcel unless that service is paid for. In the past I have just refunded the cost of products lost in transit (because Royal Mail takes no responsibility once they leave the UK) but this is a direct hit on SOTA's limited income stream and I cannot justify the continued expense. There are a small number of countries where it seems that the local postal service (or customs) appear to loose merchandise with unfortunate regularity and I will remove these from the list of countries we automatically post to – please contact me directly if you have a problem at checkout.

Some months ago the MT were asked about recognising that SOTA is now a global organisation and issuing awards that recognised that summits are now located on all continents (not mainland Antarctica – yet). Many Activators now travel around the World taking their radio equipment with them so I have introduced categories to Mountain Explorer that recognises activations from more than one continent. Whether you are a Tourist or a Globetrotter you will be able to gain recognition that you have activated away from your home continent. Chasers are not left out as I have now extended the Mountain Hunter awards to allow for chasing more continents and other awards have been extended to recognise that many Chasers and Activators are acquiring scores beyond what was ever envisaged when the programme started. Andy (MM0FMF) has implemented some changes to the database which means you should be able to check your award dates a little more efficiently, including these new awards – please use it.

Finally, I leave on vacation to EA8 before this monthly report is published so no orders will be processed until my return on 18 December – too late for Christmas delivery in many countries. In addition, from my return until mid-March I have to undergo radiotherapy treatment every day which may mean that I will not be able to respond to orders quite as efficiently as I normally try to do; please bear with me if orders take a little longer to be despatched.

Please stay safe on the hills

It's winter over here in the West Longitudes and SOTA activity always falls off but I was surprised by how little it had dropped since last month. CW took a sharp drop coupled with a sharp spike in SSB activity and, while I'm not too sure about 1 AM QSO, I won't deem it a mistake in data entry since Mike, KD5KC and company proved me wrong awhile back, and on 432 MHz as well.

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

Brad, WA6MM, joined the Herd in November, achieving Mountain Goat status with 100% unique W0C summits. His summary: "Many thanks for all the nice comments! It’s been quite an adventure for over three years doing 100% unique Colorado (W0C) peaks. This forced me to go to many places I never would have visited. I drove and climbed countless miles that I don’t think I’ll ever calculate . We have an amazing group of activators and chasers and I’ve made many friends – some face-to-face and many on the air.

Although I soloed most of my climbs, I had the pleasure of activating with WA2USA, N2GBR, N0MTN, KI6YMZ, KH7AL, K0JQZ, KC0YQF, and AE7AP. A great group of hams and mountaineers! I also had the pleasure of face-to-face dinners with K0NR, K0JJW, KX0R, N0TA, WG0AT, AD0KE, KC5CW, K7PX, N1OIE, W0CP, N0MTN, KH7AL, N7UN, W6PNG AND W7ODX. Many Mountain Goats in this group!"

"I also wanted to acknowledge my top 15 chasers. W7RV, NS7P, W0MNA, W0ERI, N4EX, NG6R, K6EL, WA2USA, KG3W, K4MF, K6HPX, N6PKT, K0LAF, KX0R, AND NE4TN. Most of this group contacted me on my Mountain Goat activation day. Of course, there are many other chasers and S2S activators that I’ve worked and that list is much longer!! SOTA would not exist without chasers and I really appreciate all of you looking out for me."

"One last comment…if I were to pick out a single SOTA activator who inspired me the most to keep activating and doing all the off-trail difficult peaks, that would be KX0R. George has an incredible SOTA resume here in Colorado. He also takes the time to document many of his climbs for those who follow. I took advantage of all his trip reports!!"

"Many thanks to all of you who helped me get to this goal. I plan on taking some time off to do some down-hill skiing and spend more time with my xyl. However, a local activator just suggested doing a peak next weekend so who knows!!!."

And from Mike, KD5KC: "Well, I am laughing my butt off! I just checked, and the 2017 Field Day results are in. KD5KC scored as the #1 station in West Texas, the #2 station in the West Gulf Division, and the #5 station in the United States in the 1C category. What makes it so amusing is that I was running QRP, and was Pedestrian Mobile."

[I put this in Awards and Achievements because Mike made 124 QSO's in 16+ hours of walking, an achievement in itself]

IDEAS: Bob, K0NR, pointed me to a thread on the SOTA Reflector about "Highest S2S." You add the elevations of the two activators. This could be a hands-down winner for those of us in North America since we have so many peaks over 4,000 meters.

NEWS:

Paul, W6PNG, reports 7 total QSO's from Wyoming and Colorado using the new FT8 mode. His description is at:

w6png.wordpress.com/2017/11/15/the-smell-of-cold-pizza/

Having joined the herd, Brad, WA6MM, has decided to branch off with some new goals. He writes: "After finally getting to my initial goal of MG doing only 100% unique Colorado peaks worth more than 6 pts, I’ve started down another path. Last weekend I participated with N0MTN in an activation with five SOTA newbies. This was my first duplicate SOTA peak…..and it felt a bit weird doing that . However, it was very rewarding activating a peak with this group of hams that are interested in SOTA. I plan to do more of this!! Many thanks to NS7P and WA2USA for help spotting us!"

"This morning I noticed several Colorado guys were activating peaks as well as many others. At the last minute, I thought I’d go activate a peak five miles from my house. The trailhead was six miles away and the hike was under an hour. This was only a one point peak…that also felt weird!. However, it was really nice being able to activate a summit with warm weather, no wind, and little effort to get there. I was able to work 37 stations over four bands and three modes. I also made four S2S contacts. I also made one DX contact in Finland. Great fun!!"

"I think I’m going to set a new goal to activate peaks from 1-4 points and make as many contacts as possible! I attached a picture of my operating position with the city of Denver far below. This is a great first peak to activate here if you live closer to sea level."

REPORT OF THE MONTH: This month, it comes from Kevin, K4KPK:

"I haven't been on a summit for a while, and I'm a marginally adequate CW op at best. Band conditions were bad when I checked them before leaving this morning, so I thought, 'I'll hang out on SSB for a while. Maybe I won't find enough chasers; maybe I'll pick up 2 or 3 on CW. I hope I can qualify the summit.' Since I was out of practice, it would be OK to work only a few contacts. And Rabun Bald has an observation deck, so there are usually 3-4 people there. But today was chilly and cloudy, and fall colors are long gone, so I had reason to hope that maybe I could work from the deck in peace and quiet."
"And it was quiet... until the 50K road race came through... just as I started working 40 minutes of CW. There was a guy at the base of the tower, wearing a yellow vest. The runners had been told, 'Check in with the guy in yellow. Make sure he writes down your number, to validate that you made it to the checkpoint.' Several of the runners blew past the guy at the base, on their way up the stairs. I was wearing a yellow jacket, so there were runners determined to check in with me (and they assumed my earbuds were for listening to my iPhone). And there were spectators who cheered, every time a runner made it to the top."

"So I sent QRM ('cause it was man-made noise) and QSB (because drowning out the signal is sort of like fading). Somebody's dog ran across my frequency cheat sheet. (I'm not kidding. Big muddy footprint right in the middle.) So I sent DOG."

That's going to do it for this month, lots of holidays coming up, I hope they're enjoyable for everyone. Activate safely,

SOTA NEWS FROM JAPAN by Toru JH0CJH

November 2017, weather in Japan became stable and fairly fine although
October was miserable. Accordingly the number of activations increased.

SOTA activities in November 2017 in Japan as of 30 November 2017.

Activation

Total 207 Activations with 2197 QSO have been made and reported.
Activation numbers are increased compare with last month because the weather
became stable. But suddenly cooled down in Japan then Northern region JA8
activities were nil. Till next spring time JA8 activations cannot expected to be many.

JA: 197 activations with 2124 QSO from Summits
JA5: 1 activations with 4 QSO from Summits
JA6: 9 activation with 69 QSO from Summits
JA8: no activation

Chasing

Total 450 Chasing QSO’s have been made and reported. According to the increase in the number of activations, the number of chasing QSO’s also increased and nearly doubled compare with October.

JA: 431 chasing QSO
JA5: 0
JA6: 19 chasing QSO
JA8: 0

Last month VK3ARR Andrew made all 4 JA region activation, and this month I made all 4 JA region activation. This is second to Andrew's record. It was JA5/KA-015 Mt. Kiyama activation and it was the summits that Andrew also activated last month. It was windy and crisp cold day but anyway I'm very happy that I made this award title following on after our Lord Andrew.....hi

Epic Two-Day Angeles National Forest Activation - Facts and Figures

By Gary Hawkins (K6YOA)

At the beginning of November, I headed out to Angeles National Forest in Southern California for a couple of nights camping before the campgrounds in the area closed for the winter. My SOTA activations this year had been minimal - a two-year old will do this! I figured I’d get in one good weekend and bag a few points before the end of the year. Rather than describe what happened, I thought it might be fun to provide the essential facts and figures for what was an epic two days of hiking and activating:

Callsign while operating: K6YOA/P - I’m old-school, I like to sign /portable - goes back to my days in England in the 1980’s working 2m contests and Worked All Britain.

Nights camping: One - I initially intended to stay two nights but plummeting temperatures and the chance of beating the Friday traffic put me off staying the second.

Distance travelled: Approximately 300 miles - I had no idea I was going to write this when I started otherwise I would have set the odometer on my Toyota 4Runner.

SOTA activations: Seven - Day #1 - W6/CT-004 (Mount Baden-Powell), W6/CT-005 (Throop Peak), W6/CT-067 (Table Mountain). Day #2 - W6/CT-071 (Circle Mountain), W6/CT-246 (Mount Lewis), W6/CT-014 (Kratka Ridge) & W6/CT-010 (Mount Islip).

Total distance hiked over two days: Approximately 17 miles; estimated off SPOT3 tracking plots.
Distance hitchhiked: 6.5 miles - having ascended Throop Peak, I then decided to take the Pacific Crest Trail along the connecting ridgeline to Mount Baden-Powell. This would save much climbing but meant I would come down to a different trailhead. Fortunately, some fellow hikers drove out of their way to get me back to my vehicle.

Total elevation gain overcame: Just 4,500ft - one of the reasons why it was possible to do so many peaks in two days.

Weight of pack: 24lbs – I carry a military-style pack; not built for lightness but great for comfort. Contains my radio stuff, plus water, food, extra clothing, two phones, SPOT3 satellite tracker, whistle/compass, medical pouch and mace (we have mountain lions and bears here!).
Lowest temperature while operating: 37F without the wind chill on Mount Islip. With the wind chill, ice was forming on my pack! Thank God, all the other peaks were pleasanter.

Gear: KX3 running 10W, 40/20/10m LNR Trail Friendly End-fed supported by 6m crappie pole (this is my go-to portable antenna). I pretty much exhausted 2 x 4200mAhr LiPo batteries.
Spotting: AT&T cellular and APRS; 3 of the 7 peaks required APRS spotting; APRS is essential for success in this area.

Operated bands: Predominately 40m and 20m, with a little 2M FM. I ventured onto 17m for one S2S contact when their spot came up on sotawatch.org. I always almost open on 40m; it’s my favorite band for activation - 20m is a close second.

Operating modes: almost entirely SSB, and a couple of FM 2M contacts; I carry my FT HT primarily for APRS spotting and emergency access via a repeater.

Number of contacts: 120; most on a single peak 25, least on a peak 14.

Cumulative time operating: 190 minutes - that’s a QSO approximately every 90 seconds.

Average site operating time: 27 minutes - when you’re trying to activate multiple peaks you must keep moving. As soon as CQ’s go unanswered, it’s time to change band or pack-up and move into another peak.

Total activator points scored: 46 - I scored zero for Table Mountain (W6/CT-067) as I’d activated it earlier in the year directly after Field Day. Still, this was my best ever two-day operating total.

S2S points scored: 64 - a tidy score; helped considerably by the fact that WA9STI was operating on Mount Islip, while I operated Mount Lewis and Krakta Ridge;

Chasers: All my chasers were greatly appreciated and certainly made my job a lot easier. Special mention to W7RV (Tommy) who got me on all seven peaks and Gary (W0MHA) for getting me on six, and for responding to my very first CQ’s TWICE on 20m, without even having to spot!

Screw-ups: One – I plugged a cable from ACC2 port to the Mic on KX3 - the ACC2 now no longer functions with external PPT switch! Note to self, “be more careful.”

Number of fellow SOTA operators met face-to-face: One - great catching up with WA9STI again. Scott was coming down from Mount Islip as I was going up. He had worked 57 contacts, mainly on CW; I was hoping some of them would not be put off responding to my CQ calls for zero points! As it was, the chasers came through again and I could get off that cold, cold mountaintop.

Time away from home: 42hrs - my soon to be three-year old was thrilled to see me get home. On the phone, as I was driving back, she told me, “you should get home before it’s dark.” I did not manage this but she still gave me a massive hug when I walked through the door.

Best regards,

Gary (K6YOA)

SOTA AWARDS DECEMBER 2017 from Barry GM4TOE - SOTA Awards Manager.

December was reasonably quiet on the Awards front (slightly up on November) but incredibly busy with merchandise orders! Congratulations to new Mountain Goats JF1NDT, DJ2FR and G3TQQ and to Sloths N9XG, ON5SWA, SQ9XSN, SV2RMR and W7KKM. NE4TN on 50k points and DJ9BX on 10k points join the ranks of the “addicted” SOTA Chasers!

Two other great achievements are EA2WX with the first Amethyst Mountain Hunter Award and 4X4-2238 achieving one of the very rarely claimed SWL awards. Well done everybody.

Finally – congratulations to Guru EA2IF on being awarded the Sherpa Award for 2017 in recognition of his contribution to the SOTA programme which included his assistance with translations for the MT, his documentation of his trials and tribulations with a move to a less than ideal qth and many other little things he has done to assist. All in the true spirit of helping others and helping promote SOTA. The MT had a number of people in mind for this award and the final decision, although not easy, was unanimous. Our thanks to Richard G3CWI at SOTAbeams for sponsoring this award.

My sincere thanks for all the donations received in December, and the really nice comments; your contributions help keep the awards programme alive and flourishing while the comments mean everything to those of us working to keep SOTA alive and growing.

This month's report is, of necessity, rather brief. I did not return from vacation until 18th December and there were an incredible number of award claims and merchandise orders to sort out; I did manage to get all orders submitted before 19th December finalised and posted so you should receive these in the post before the end of the first week in January – if not before.

Payment for awards has always been possible using Paypal and a number of other means including cheque payment. With the imminent closure of the Royal Bank of Scotland branch in Banff, and no viable alternative being provided in this town or nearby, I will be unable to pay cheques into our account at Natwest. Therefore, from 1 January 2018, I must cease to accept this form of payment; this will inconvenience a few people but I hope to have an alternative to Paypal available shortly. In future (or until I can find something else) I can only accept payment by Paypal, direct bank transfer or cash. This change is unlikely to have any severe effects but I am conscious that some people do not like Paypal or any form of internet banking. Finally, just for the record, all orders must be prepaid before I despatch them – we do not offer cash on delivery or invoiced payments.

I introduced a new system for ordering trophies which was designed to reduce the cost for a large number of claimants – priced as the trophy blank plus engraving at a cost per character. The vagaries of the SOTA community amaze me; in the short time this facility has been in place the average price for a trophy has risen. Not a problem but be aware that the cost of a basic trophy is within your control. When deciding on the date, and other engraving, please also be aware that there is limited space on the face of the glass blank and I am unable to engrave a full date (e.g. 31st December 2017) without obscuring the design and there is really only space at the bottom of the trophy for one line of script; the engraver will try their best to fit it but there are limits.

Last but not least, just a reminder that from early January to late March I have to travel to Aberdeen every weekday for medical treatment (around 6 hours a day) so there may be times when delays in sending out orders may occur. My XYL has agreed to help but she is not completely comfortable with how the system works so may take more time.

Best wishes for the coming year and be safe when out on the hills

This will be a somewhat abbreviated report. News is a bit scarce with the holidays and all, and I haven't had much time to go scout out news items.

Etienne, K7ATN, offered a link to the Pacific Northwest SOTA Newsletter at:

www.pnwsota.org/sites/pnwsota.org/files/downloads/K7ATN/PNW%20SOTA%20Newsletter%20Jan-Feb%202018.pdf

with some stunning photographs including several fire lookouts.

Jeffrey, AA6XA, reported in with: "As a peak bagger, I like to find lists of peaks I can climb, then to go out and climb them. Last winter while waiting for drier weather I noticed that there were only six SOTA peaks in Pinnacles National Park, in central California. This seemed like a good list to tackle this year. I had activated two of the peaks last year, but my goal was to climb all six in 2017."

"Only one peak, North Chalone, has a maintained trail to the summit. Two more, South Chalone and Hawkins Peak, have trails that get you close to the summit. The other three are off trail, and require various amounts of bushwhacking. Most of the vegetation in the park is chaparral, and can be extremely hard to bushwhack through. Hawkins Peak and North Chalone had been previously activated, but I was able to do the first activations of the rest of the peaks."

"The highlight of all the peaks was on North Chalone, when two (critically endangered) California condors flew directly over my head, then landed a few meters away. In case you need more of my condor pictures for some reason, they're here."Trip reports, in the order I climbed them:
Peak 2540
Hawkins Peak
Peak 2236
Harris Benchmark
South Chalone Peak
North Chalone Peak
[Ed Note: The Pinnacles National Park in Central California is actually only one half of a park. It is directly on the west side of the San Andreas fault which runs from the Sea of Cortez in the south to the Pacific coast north of San Francisco. The western side of the fault is moving northwards. The other half of the park is on the east side of the fault and has been stationary in the general vicinity of Palm Springs in Southern California, where the central California part used to be, millions of years ago. There is a seismograph in the park headquarters which shows current slippage of the fault. One wonders as you stand astride the San Andreas if "The Big One" is going occur [ ]

Fred, KT5X, reports on an activation in Valle Grande, NM, of a peak that has been off-limits, and was just opened:

"The photo shows John, K1JD, on left and Fred, KT5X (aka WS0TA) on right, taken about 1/4th of the way up Medio Peak by Tom, K6TAA. You can see in the background, a small part of the meadow which is the bottom of the great caldera, a collapsed volcano. Medio is one of seven smaller volcanic remnants that are INSIDE the giant crater."
"We really lucked out. We weren't very confident we could do this remote and challenging ascent. When we got to the park headquarters and told the rangers what we intended, they responded, "wait... WHAT? You want to hike WHERE?" They looked these old timers up and down doubtfully. They decided to try and enable us. We WERE the only ones in the entire park, after all. The roads in the park are closed for winter. No problem, no snow yet, so they GAVE US A DRIVER and a VAN, and drove us to the nearest access point. We hadn't asked for a taxi service, but it's what we got!"
"As we began walking across the higher ground of the gigantic meadow in the crater, six coyotes popped up out of the tall grass, BIG coyotes, wolf sized coyotes, and they ran off in all different directions. Wow. Then several ravens took off and we realized they were all ravaging an elk kill in the meadow! We continued hiking across the meadow discovered some of the largest chunks of obsidian I have ever encountered, snowflake obsidian at that. Remarkable. Then we realized we were being circled from above. Really, quite low, was a great golden eagle checking us out. Probably the same one that circled us when we did South Mountain in the park on Wednesday."
"We entered the valley that we had hoped to ascend, found it to be quite a jumble of boulders, and deadfall, but alas, there was an "elk highway" going up the steep ridge. We followed it. Another hour of steep climbing, much deadfall the elk showed us how to get around, and we were on top. After the activation, we phoned the park rangers from the peak (cool!) told them a pick-up time, and the van met us two hours later, to the minute. What a day. Ggorgeous weather, ten degrees at the start, probably 35 at the end."
And, from Curtis, KC5CW, we have a harrowing account of Andrew's [KD5ZZK] activation. It came with the heart-stopping subject line, "Andrew is out of surgery ...":
"I thought that might get your attention. So to follow up with the Turkey Trip report.... I just got off the phone with Andrew, KD5ZZK, and he gave me permission to share what happened."
"Andrew and I activated Luera and S Luera Peak, which was an all day adventure that George and Randy now have to do since they wouldn't tell us about the trip up Baldy and the trail rash on my Jeep is in honor of them now... After we activated S Luera we split up with me heading North/home and him heading further SW. Andrew has a new 4wheeler and was coming down Fox Mountain, W5N/AP-006, to the gate where he had parked his ATV. it was very dark and he had to do a 7 point turn to get it facing back downhill. On his 2nd backup, he didn't see where the edge of the 30 degree treed cliff was and one of his rear tires went off and rolled the ATV over sideways, he either jumped off or was thrown clear of it and it rolled down the hill, side over side until it stopped at a tree with the headlight facing back up at him. He had rolled down the hill until he himself was stopped by a tree."

"Luckily, he always wears a helmet and goggles so he didn't crack anything there, but he started feeling his right arm/elbow that hurt REALLY bad and then he lost consciousness for an undetermined amount of time. When he regained consciousness, he got on his HT that was programmed for the New Mexico Megalink repeater system that has a repeater extremely close to where he was (just up the hill). Randy, K5RHD, was listening for him and was ready to head the 3.5hr drive to give assistance but Andrew figured he would try and see if he could get mobile again first."

"Andrew kept his helmet on to keep his noggin safer on his hike down to the ATV and found it with the engine off and it's wheels up in the air. When he bought it, they had a deal where you could pick an add-on and luckily Andrew picked the winch option, which they installed for him before he drove away with it. He was able to put the winch up over a branch and make a figure 4 to raise and twist the ATV to an upright position with it still facing uphill. The handlebars were bent, one really bad, the front fender cracked and both luggage racks bent."

"He was able to get it started on the second try and left it running to keep the battery from draining from use of the winch. He then walked the ATV uphill from tree to tree using the winch until he could tie to a tree on the other side of the road. The parking brake was able to hold it as he would test letting off on the winch cable and then he eventually got it back on the road. He was over 6 miles from his truck and with his pain in his right hand/arm/elbow and the throttle being on the bent right handle bar, he made slow time but told Randy he would check in again when he got back to his truck."

"All this time Randy was relaying status to a chat room for SOTA that some of us die-hards who eat, breath, and sleep SOTA were in. We were very concerned that he might have a concussion or a break/fracture. Dave, KG6EIU, and I were discussing the nearest hotel and Dave found one in Reserve. When Andrew got to the truck, Randy talked him into backtracking 50 miles [~80 km] to Reserve vs driving to Hobbs NM and staying at the inn. Dave has a friend that's a nurse and gave him some tests to perform and he passed those."

"He had a LOT of swelling in his arm but didn't think he needed an ER so he drove towards home, ending up sleeping in the back of his truck in a parking lot in Terrell TX before heading the rest of the way home to Baton Rouge LA. Soon after arriving home, he got an X-ray. I won't post the picture, but his elbow is a separate piece of bone a few inches away from where it's supposed to go."

"Which brings me to today, he had surgery with a pin and some of the bone frags washed out. They didn't have to put him completely under but they blocked the nerve from his shoulder down and put him into lala land enough that he doesn't remember hearing saws or drills. His wife was taking him home and she can't even utter the evil word "4-wheeler" but she is taking good care of him. He couldn't have typed all this out with his left hand on his phone so he asked me to relay the story of why there was an abrupt cancellation of his alerts on SOTAWATCH."

With that sobering report, we'll close and wish everyone a Happy and Peaceful New year! Remember to "Keep SOTA Safe."

Thank you for the donation received this month, it is really appreciated and helps fund the IT systems provided for everybody to use.

I have had a number of claims for awards where either the date of the award is blatantly wrong or the person applying has not even bothered to enter the date of the award. The date that you enter here is the date you achieved that level of award, not necessarily the date you ordered it. It does not take you very long to check your own record on the database and ensure that the date is correct AND you are actually qualified to claim that award.

Because I have to rely on my xyl to do much of the work at the moment I have told her to just enter the date claimed on the order – if it is wrong it will be wrong on your certificate and, no, I will not re-issue it. If the claim is invalid or the date is missing you will just not receive the award without any notification from me. The only exception to this is if you have ordered a printed certificate when you will be emailed for the chance to correct it

May I remind people that SOTA is funded by the profit (small) on merchandise, trophies and printed certificates and without that small profit (plus some very generous donations) we could not provide the IT systems free of charge for everybody.

Please take care and be safe on the hills – we have already read of several fatalities in the hills round the globe, please don’t contribute to the statistics.

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

Word arrived from Littleton, Colorado [Brad, WA6MM] that Steve, K7PX, has become the latest North American Mountain Goat! Congratulations Steve. BAAAAA!

From Rob, AE7AP: “Please welcome Vick, K7VK, as the regional manager for the 7 regions that make up mountainous northwestern Montana. Vick lives in Missoula and has spent many years working and exploring the peaks and backcountry of Montana. Be sure to say “hello” when you visit Montana!”

The SOTA Database is a trove of achievements, and for the end of the year Tom, M1EYP, dug in and compiled a listing of the top 20 Activators, out of over 5,900, based on grand total of completed QSO’s during activations since the beginning of the SOTA Programme. Not too surprising, the first nine are European amateurs. Then we come to #10, KX0R, with 25,427 QSO’s, followed by #17, NA6MG, at 22,702 QSO’s.

BREAKING NEWS:

NA SOTA has grown! We have six new Associations: VO1-Newfoundland; VO2-Labrador; VY1-Yukon; VY2-Prince Edward Island; XE1- Mexico Central; and XE2-Mexico North. XE1 brings in over 4,400 summits, and some of them are active volcanoes. Maybe they can have an “Eruption Bonus” as well as the usual seasonal ones?

OTHER NEWS:

In the, “This can only happen once a year” department, Rob, AE7AP, reports: "Bill, N7MSI, and Rob, AE7AP, were able to squeeze 10-points out of a 2-pointer this year, with a “UTC Rollover” activation of W7M/CL-161. Although this is one of the more accessible summits in the Helena area, it still took over 30-minutes to drive the final 250 feet through deep snow to the parking lot and another 2-hours to snowshoe 1.5 miles to the summit. An inversion made the temperature somewhat warmer than the -8°F [-22C] in Helena, and briskly pleasant. We made the summit with 8-minutes to spare in 2017 and were able to finish our 2017 SOTA season on VHF with the help of our friends in Helena. We began 2018 with a more leisurely HF activation on 20m and 40m, followed by a very nice descent through dry-fluffy powder under a near full moon.

From Duffey, KK6MC, via K0NR: “I am writing the QST summary and web page writeup for the January VHF contest. I would like any photos (high resolution) you may have of your activity, along with stories of your activities. Readers really like photos with people in them. Among other things, I am interested in your experiences with and opinions of FT8 operations, rover activity and portable ops, and especially for January, stories and photos with a weather angle.” Duffey’s email is jamesduffey at comcast dot net

Regionally organized SOTA Activity events can be organized at anytime during 2018 by interested groups.

Barry, N1EU also mentioned that the tentative dates for the 2018 NA-EU S2S Events are 21 April [in conjunction with QRPTTF] and 29 Sep.

REPORT OF THE MONTH:

Rick, K7TEJ: “On 31 Dec 17, Jim Moore WB7ENX & I made a year ending SOTA trip up to the Mogollon Rim in northern Arizona. We activate two 10 pointers, Baker Butte (W7A/AE-035) and Rim Road Peak (W7A/CS-020).”

“First up was Baker Butte, at 8077’. The site of a fire watch tower, access was easy, it would’ve been a drive up, but the gate to the access road was closed for the winter, so it was an easy .3 mile hike with a 200’ elevation gain to the summit. We started to set up, Jim getting up on 2m FM to work the usual suspects back in Phoenix. Climbing up the fire tower help him get his signal out the 80 miles over the trees, he quickly made his 4 contacts to validate the activation. I had antenna problems, bad coax I think, thou changing coax did not help, so I abandoned trying 2m and moved on to setting up for HF operations.”

“Took me a little longer than planned to get my antenna up as the ground was pretty much rock, making getting the support post for my mast far enough into the ground proved difficult. In the mean time Jim was having antenna issues on HF, he thinks the matching network on his End Fed was shot, so he gave up on this peak. I thnk he made a few contact but it was difficult. So now I’m ready to go QRV and I go to tune up and the radio shuts off. Turns out my Battery, (Which I charged the day before is showing only 11 volts!). Jim offers his battery, which get me going. I made 18 QSO on 20m before the pile up died and then moved to 40m for 11 more QSO’s, for a total of 29 QSO’s, to date, my best total on an activation.”

We role down and packed up for the 20 mile trip to the next summit, but not before documenting the Survey marker at the tower and finding the one patch of snow. The trip to Rim Road Peak was uneventful over a well graded road, with a few stops along the way to take in and photograph the view from the top of the rim. Come for the radio, stay for the view!

“Rim Road Peak is really not much more than an escarpment that juts out from the edge of the rim, really not much more that a gentle rise from Rim Road. After finding a clear spot within the AZ, we pick our spots, far enough apart to minimize any mutual interference, Jim set up using a random wire, given his previous antenna issues, me, I set up by a fire pit, evidence of previous enjoyment of this area, , this time being close enough to the truck, I used my Deep cycle marine battery.”

“On the air at 2035UTC, the pile up started early and ran consistently for about 45 minutes, making 35 QSO’s on 20m. Thanks to all the Chasers who spotted me to keep the pile up going. Two QSO’s stood out during this activation: first was KM6PIH/AG in San Bernadino, CA. Not only is he a newly minted General, but I was his first ever HF contact. I know you always remember that first contact. Congratulation David C Lopez, Jr. on earning your General and making your first Contact, Glad I could help!”

“Second was with my good friend Bob AJ5C in Harrison, Arkansas. Bob is one of the nicest guy’s I’ve never met. We’ve been friend on the Air (and later Facebook) for quite a while now. I took a little bit of time out of the pile to quickly catch up and wish him and his family a Happy New Years”

“In the meantime, Jim’s random wire was working well for him as he made contacts on 20m, 17m and even on on 60m, a first for him. He also work the Phoenix crown again on 2m FM. Finally the pile up died and it was time to pack up and head home. Thanks to all the chasers and spotters who helped make these two activations successful.”

SOTA Portugal – Paulo CT2IWW
Next April, the 7th, Portuguese activators will head to the hills for another edition of Summits on The Air (SOTA) – Portugal´s Day. Further details will be released in the months to come but one expects this to be within the same framework as previous events.

On the same day, the organizers will announce the full program for the yearly gathering of SOTA- Portugal enthusiasts. This meet is scheduled for May 12 and 13 and will take place in the Greater Lisbon Area.

A basic framework has been established for the first day (12th) to be dedicated to a meeting and technical presentations, which will take place at the ARVM radio club headquarters, in Moscavide. The second day (Sunday, 13th) will be time to go activate a yet to be determined SOTA reference.

Stay tuned!

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

From Scott, VY1CO [one of our new NA Assoc. Mgrs.]: “Not too much to report from VY1-land just yet. Within the next few weeks I hope to get out on some of Yukon’s lesser summits to activate at least one…I wound up in this position by asking about SOTA…now I am one! Simon in UK has done the initial mapping…just need to get myself up a mtn.”

Welcome Scott!! Just hearing from a new NA Association is an achievement. You might want to wait for a little more daylight, however.

Now, moving much further south, from Chuy, XE2N: "Hola Fred and Amigos SOTAeros! It is a pleasure to know about this project and also clear that yes, participate in it; we are just beginning the SOTA project both in the XE1 and XE2 areas respectively, I clarify that in the two entities I am the regional responsible and very probably also in its moment of the entity XE3.

Welcome Chuy!! I still maintain that the XE Associations should get bonus points for an active volcano, and double that if it’s erupting. I’m sure the KH6, W6, W7O, and W7W Associations will be weighing in on that proposal too. [

And George, VY2GF, checked in … no news from VY2 yet. Welcome George!! Wait 'til summer comes.

Danny, AE9F, reported: “After a large log upload in February, I was pleased to discover that in mid-January I had passed 25,000 chaser points (W6 region). Done exclusively with my barefoot FT-817 with modest antennas, and buried here on the coast (El Granada) in a bit of a canyon. The kudos really goes to the activators, who manage to hear my little five-watt signal out in the field. Despite recent stretches of bad propagation, chasing SOTA has been a lot of fun.”

Congratulations Danny!

And finally, Loren, VO1PWF, checks in from VO1: Considering the Region, it’s active and a lot of interest…I was hoping to get 2 activations done this winter but travel in the back country is hard due to the lack of freezing on the ponds. We (the ground search and rescue team I’m with) have already had to go bail out 4 people since Dec breaking through ice."

“I did NL highest point in SEP and my hiking buddy that did it with me is now a ham because of it. When the snow goes and trails are more accessible I’m sure things will perk up around here.”

NEWS: I suppose the Big News for NA SOTA is the move of our group reflector from Yahoo to groups.io A big thanks to Barry, N1EU, and the crew … the process was essentially automatic to all of us group members [not so automatic for Barry and the crew], but the Yahoo Groups meeting place is now deactivated. If you were a member of the NA SOTA Yahoo group, you are now a member of the NASOTA@groups.io group. All you have to do is change your address book entry.

We have two new Regional NA Awards to announce, both from W5N. From Fred, KT5X [aka WS0TA]:
Activating peaks wouldn’t be much fun without the CHASERS! As a “Thank You” to Chasers the NM SOTA Association is offering this award. The medallions will be serial numbered (who will collect serial #1 shown in the attached photo?) and issued until medallions on hand (about 25) run out).

NEW MEXICO CHASERS CENTURY AWARD:
The award is for making 100 contacts with New Mexico activations.

The medallion: Made by well known Jemez Pueblo potter, Bernice Gachupin (whose husband is Hall of Fame runner, Steve Gachupin, six time winner of the Pikes Peak Marathon). It is hand-made, fired in a simple wood fired kiln, using Red Mesa clay. It is in the shape of the state of New Mexico, and features meaningful hand-painted designs including the famous Zia symbol found on the state flag. They are signed work of art. It will be serial numbered on the front, and personalized to you on the back.

How to earn it: Make one hundred QSO’s with New Mexico activations beginning February 1, 2018. For the purposes of this award, you may work multiple stations and each station multiple times on different modes and bands on the same peak on the same day.

While New Mexico is one of the least populated states, we feature ten “Mountain Goats” who together did almost 700 activations last year. Most operated on multiple bands providing several thousand opportunities to add to your count.

Submit a log, a numbered list of QSO’s, showing call sign, date, band, mode, and peak designation, to me by email for verification. Upon verification, you will be given an address to which to send ten dollars to cover costs, including mailing.

Have fun Chasing us!

ICONIC PEAKS OF NEW MEXICO AWARD

The Award will be New Mexico shaped pottery made by Jemez Pueblo potter, Bernice Gachupin (wife of Steve, the six times winner of the Pikes Peak Marathon and Hall of Fame Native American runner). There are several slightly different designs, the attached photo shows one of them. These are the same medallions that will be used for the NM Century Chasers’ Award. Award will be offered until I run out of medallions

In naming what I consider the most iconic peaks of New Mexico, I include three that require class 3 climbs. I don’t want to encourage anyone who really shouldn’t be there to try them. For this reason, none of them have to be done to qualify for the award. I take NO RESPONSIBILITY if you choose to include one of the climbs. That is YOUR decision.

  1. Wheeler (SS-001) - NM’s tallest peak over 13,100 ft
  2. Sierra Blanca (SC-001) - NM’s greatest prominence, sacred to the Apache
  3. Chicoma (SE-001) - 2nd to Blanco in prominence, sacred to Santa Clara, north rim of Jemez Super-Volcano
  4. South Sandia (SI-003) - the more challenging of the two peak s representing the gigantic Sandia uplift
  5. Mt Taylor (SM-001) - gigantic volcano, sacred to the Navajo, “the Body of the Rock Monster”
  6. Hermit Peak (PW-015) - Beacon for travelers on the Old Santa Fe Trail, incredible east facing cliff
  7. Capulin (SG -009) - the national park east of Raton, NM’s classic cinder cone
  8. Organ Needle (OR-001) - pinnacle in the sky in the Organ Mtns (misnomer, originally “oregano” mountains)
  9. Cabezon (SM-019) - “Head of the Rock Monster” to the Pueblo’s, taller and higher than similar Devil’s Tower, WY
  10. Pedernal (SE-018) - the mountain that eclipses, ten ft wide, a mile long, made famous in paintings by Georgia O’Keefe
Note 1: that 8, 9, and 10 all have class 3 climbs on them from which it is possible to fall and be hurt. Don’t do them unless very confident of your ability, safety rope strongly suggested.
Note 2: No starting date. If you have already done some or all, that’s fine, qualifies.
NM Resident: Activate ANY SEVEN of the ten to qualify for the award. NON-Resident: Activate ANY FIVE of the ten to qualify for the award. Send me [Fred, KT5X, just.one.hill@gmail.com] a list of the dates of your activations and ten dollars.
From Paul, W6PNG, a cool report about Death Valley and “The Racetrack” where rocks have legs:
    https://w6png.wordpress.com/2018/02/06/hitting-the-wall-a-death-valley-high/

Ian, VE6IXD, reported from Alberta:
“Jan 20th was the start of the ARRL VHF contest. The weather was also reasonable for the time of year, so we had 5 SOTA activators out on the hills around Calgary, VE6VID and VE6LCE on Ranger Summit, VE6AGR and VE6LEW on Square Butte, and VE6IXD on McLean Hill. The Elecraft radio owners took a hand-held each, and the 817 owners took some more serious VHF antennas to try some SSB as well as FM contacts. While we all activated summits and made the S2S contacts for SOTA, I know that I did not manage to contact the other players on all the various bands that were available. I have to find a better logging system than my usual SOTA pad of paper so that I can easily see the gaps in contacting each contestant on all the bands they have available.”

“I enclose a photo taken on McLean Hill showing VE6IXD’s antenna set-up. The pole is 15 ft (4.6 m) tall, the mid five sections of an MFJ 10m telescoping fibreglass pole. The top antenna is a 6m Moxon, the second antenna a 6-element 435 MHz yagi (cheap LEO design), and the bottom antenna is a commercial Arrow 4-element back-packer yagi. The three antennas are connected to a 4-way co-ax switch mounted on the pole, and the 817 had key frequencies stored in memory, so it was quick and easy to change bands. The two yagi antennas are mounted at 45 degrees to the horizontal so both vertical and horizontal polarized antennas could be worked, albeit at a 3dB signal penalty,”
“In summary it was an entertaining day for both the SOTA activators, and for the more serious contesters.”

That will do it from the New World for this month, I’m pretty much out of time.

SOTA NEWS FROM NEW ZEALAND by Warren ZL2AJ

SOTA Activity Report for January / February 2018

List Summits activated
ZL_Activations

The spring dried out into a great summer, mixed with the odd tropical cyclone. Despite the odd weather bomb 22 activations have been recorded for January / February either in ZL or by ZL activators. This report welcomes 3 new activators all from Christchurch. ZL3IN Paul, ZL3GIG Ian and ZL3BC Brent. It is great to see some new callsigns broadcasting from summits. We all hope we hear more from you. Soren ZL1SKL has also been busy adding to his SOTA Activator log.
I had the great fortune to spend some time in Norfolk Island and Springbrook in January with my lovely (now) wife Emma. Naturally the radio came with and we activated Mount Bates, the sole summit on Norfolk Island, and Springbrook mountain, inland from Surfers. I recommend Norfolk Island as a place to visit if you ever get the chance. The place is full of history and beauty, with a friendly island culture to go with and cuisine that is genuinely tasty.
On Waitangi Day myself and Myah (Emma’s daughter) thought we would have a go at a summit with no track. A bush bash if you will. This was tough going and we relied on our GPS heavily. We did make it to the top and worked Kyle ZL2KGF summit to summit. It taught us both some bush and navigational skills. Unfortunately there was no view from this summit which is one of the drawcards to SOTA for me.

Achievements include Wynne ZL2ATH making 250 Summit to summit points. Summit to summit contacts are some of the most treasured contacts in SOTA and Wynne has achieved a great result. 11 ZL hams have now achieved over 100 chaser points. Chasers are just as important as activators in SOTA as it can be very lonely on the summit without chasers to work.

That’s all for this edition. I look forward to working you from the next summit.

Total Summits Activated for Period – 22
Total number of ZL summits – 5187
Total number of ZL summits activated – 140
Total ZL Chaser contacts logged for period 374

SOTA South Africa – Brian ZS6BV

SOTA ZS activity.

The additional South African summits that were mapped last year and newly added to the database have started seeing activity and SOTA is getting good exposure in the Radio ZS magazine thanks to the editor Dennis Green ZS4BS, who is also a SOTA activator. The twelve months to date have seen a 14% increase in Activations, a 45% increase in Chases and an 8% increase in Summit to Summits against the previous twelve months in South Africa.

A special upcoming SOTA Alert.
Tylor Stegmann, a Scout from 1st Polokwane Scout Group, is completing his Springbok (SA’s Top Award, as in Queen Scout or Eagle Scout) and he has made SOTA the theme for his expedition over the coming Easter weekend, 30th March to 2nd April. During the expedition he will be activating two 6 point summits (ZS/LP-052 Ribbokkop and ZS/LP-055 Applous) using the Group call sign ZR6PS for DX as he has a class B amateur licence. Details, times and frequencies will be posted on Reflector Pre-planning shortly and an alert on Upcoming Activations. Look out for him.

ZS6BV’s preferred SOTA Equipment.
For SOTA I use a Yaesu FT-857D with a YT100 tuner mounted in a lightweight backpack frame, and LiFePO4 7.5Ah batteries. Antennas I use are either a linked inverted V dipole (80, 40, 20, 15, and 10m) or an end fed sloper with a 9:1 unun. As a mast I carry either a 10m fiberglass telescopic or two extender painter poles, which I join end to end with a short plastic pipe, giving me a 7m height. I have a Signalink USB interface for digital modes through a Linux Netbook and I have just constructed a homebrew dual paddle portable key for CW. I also use a homebrew 2m / 70cm (3el / 5el take down) handheld beam antenna and a Baofeng UV-5RHP 8W Handheld with a 2800mAh battery.

73, Brian ZS6BV

SOTA AWARDS MARCH 2017 from Barry GM4TOE - SOTA Awards Manager.

March has been a busy month for awards; because I am on vacation in the last week of March these results are up to 25 March, any later applications for Awards will be included in my April report.

Congratulations to KI4TN, EA1AER and G4YSS on achieving Mountain Goat. John, G4YSS has achieved his MG entirely on 160m. M6BWA has achieved her 2500 points entirely at VHF/UHF, again a magnificent achievement.

The higher realms of Slothdom are represented this month by M0BKF, KB7HH and GM4WHA well done to these Chasers.

K7MAS has claimed the first “Tourist” Mountain Explorer award. These new additions to the Mountain Explorer programme have been introduced for those many Activators who take their gear, and operate, when on foreign vacations (or employer funded work trips, no doubt). Do you qualify, check your “My Awards” entry on the database.

I know this is a regular occurrence in my monthly reports but PLEASE check your database entry before making a claim, then double check that what you claim on the order is actually what you are qualified for. This will save me a lot of double checking and email correspondence.

If you place an order, whether for Awards or merchandise, the shopping site will email you a confirmation. If you do not receive a confirmation of your order, with an order number, your order has NOT been placed or you have put an incorrect email address on your order. If in doubt contact me please.

There will be a limited range of SOTA merchandise available at the Norbreck Rally in Blackpool. Please visit the SOTA stand and, if possible, prise open your wallet and help our funds!

With luck, I might actually manage to get up a hill and activate; starting small to get my fitness back then I need to play catch-up with all these super fit Activators who have been comparing ages on the reflector – I am definitely a sloth!

Please take care and be safe on the hills

NORTH AMERICAN REPORT from Skip K6DGW

Greetings from North America

This will be a somewhat shorter report, I hope to recover to the usual expansive one for April, life has just overwhelmed ham radio and SOTA in March. The statistics look fairly constant and it does not look like Spring has arrived in much of the New World.

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

Fred, KT5X, reports: “First two Chasers to achieve The NM Century Award are NS7P and K6EL. They have each submitted a list of (over) 100 chases with NM activators. I will also honor 200 QSO’s, a Double Century, 500, a Half Millenium, and 1,000 (Millenium) awards UNTIL I run out of medallions. In state Activators to achieve The Iconic Peaks of NM Award are KE5AKL, NM5S, and KT5X. Complete rules for these awards can be found on the QRZ page of WS0TA.I am hoping that these awards may inspire other Associations to sponsor SOTA awards.”

[K6DGW note]: It should be noted that the award for this achievement is a hand-made ceramic medallion crafted by a noted artist in New Mexico. Fred also points out: “These awards are offered until I run out of medallions. I have over 30. (I ‘challenge’ other Associations to offer SOTA operating awards ;-)”

Bruce, W2SE, reports on his behalf: “On 25-Mar-2018, I achieved Super Sloth, 10,000 Chaser points while chasing Steve WI2W who was on W2/NJ-009 Palisades HP on 40m CW.
I did order a certificate from Barry. A trophy order will occur soon once I hear from Barry on whether 10K is different from 1K so I can decide on an engraving.”

TRAVELERS:

Always great to welcome traveling hams from other parts of the world, from Paul, HB9DST/AA1MI: “In a few weeks, I will be departing for a trip to the US, and it will include several weeks in the great Southwest where I hope to activate a number of SOTA Associations. (Interesting aside: it seems that almost everyone I’ve met here in Switzerland has seen the Grand Canyon. Me? Grew up in PA, went to school in IN, moved to MA and NH – and never visited the Grand Canyon! Now that I’m retired, it’s about time…)”

“Anyway, below is a rough schedule. I post it here in case any of you would care to get together for a beer or a joint activation or whatever. I’ve established contact with some SOTA ops already, but in other areas it seems there aren’t too many around. And even if we can’t meet in person, please listen for AA1MI/P and give me a chaser point or two. Thanks!”

"22 April: arrive Palm Springs (where my sister-in-law lives)

23 - 24 April: Palm Springs region activation(s) – contacted Paul W6PNG, but no definite plans for a meetup yet.

26 - 27 April: Grand Canyon South Rim, including activation of W7A/CN-013 – no plans for a meetup.

30 April - 1 May: Sante Fe – in contact with Fred KT5X

3 - 4 May: Colorado Springs – in contact with Steve WG0AT

5 May: Scotts Bluff W0N/PH-005 – a quickie activation, no overnight there

6 May: Stop off at Jelm Mountain W7Y/EW-006 en route to Aspen

8 - 9 May: Moab/Arches National Park – no plans yet for a meetup

11 - 12 May: Las Vegas – no plans yet for a meetup

13 - 14 May: Back to Palm Springs

15 May: Back to Zurich via Chicago

If anyone has any tips for this trip, I’m all ears! I’ve tried to do some research, but more info is always good!"

Paul is good on QRZ, give him a shout if you might be able to meet him. I too have seen the Grand Canyon, 4 or 5 dozen times, always from 38,000 feet. A few years ago, we actually went there. Truly incredible!

APOLOGY:

I failed to include an item from Pete, WA7JTM, the W7A Association Manager last month, and my only reason for where it went is, “I don’t know.” He points out a really great way to merge different ham activities, in this case the W7A January VHF Contest/SOTA Mega-Activation Day:

“We had 14 stations on 13 summits simultaneously on Sunday morning. Over 100 S2S contacts were made (I made 31 myself) and over 600 QSO’ overall on mostly VHF (and some HF also). I have checked the logs submitted to ARRL for QRP portable and Arizona had 13 entrants (all SOTA ops), and the next highest state had three.”

“Anyhow, it was fun, increased SOTA activity, and I expect (make that hope) to see some good press in the QST write up for SOTA. We will be doing it again next January…if not sooner in another QRP contest.”

VE3 ASSOCIATION:

We’re approaching the end of new associations for the northern part of North America [well, except for Greenland [ ], Michael, VE3WMB/VA2NB reports:

“The visible part of the iceberg is the new VE3 - Canada - Ontario Association starting on April 1st, with 1.000 new SOTA references you can already discover on the SOTA Mapping Project14 .”

Many thanks to Bill (VE3FI), Martin (VA3SIE) and others who helped to make this into a reality. I have created a group called VE3SOTA here on Groups.IO for VE3 SOTA related discussions that may not be of interest to a wider audience (ie. NA SOTA).
Please join us if you are in, or near Ontario, or plan on visiting and doing some activations in the future."

Thanks Michael, and I will be getting you on the Greater NA SOTA mailing lists. Congratulations and thanks to all who made this happen! And thanks to CCO for all the support for CQP.

SO. COOK IS.: Oleh, KD7WPJ, will be active as E51BCP, possibly in mid-April, QRP of course.

Apologies to all for the shortness of this, life has been very full of late, more than I expected at 77 years of age. I think things will settle down in a month or two, especially the repetitive physical therapy for a shoulder injury from my adventures in my 20’s. We’ll end with Brad, WA6MM:

“Once in a while something makes an impression on you on a climb to activate a peak. I’m not talking about the absolute breath-taking beauty of the mountains or meeting the fantastic people enjoying the outdoors. Sometimes it’s coming across something that makes you think a bit deeper – perhaps some internal prospective on things.”

“On one my recent off-trail activations, I came across a grave marker. It was located in an area where nobody would stumble upon it and I’m sure only family members and friends would know anything about it. It won’t describe what climb and where it’s located as I believe the family might want to keep it private”

"The marker only had a name, quote, and eagle engraved on it. No birth or death date. The marker was not old – maybe 5-10 years. I read the engraved quote and just stood there for many minutes thinking about how it relates to my life and my adventures.

Here’s the quote:

‘Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go’."

SOTA Portugal – Paulo CT2IWW

SOTA – Portugal Day on April 21st
On Saturday, the 21st of April, dozens of activators are expected to participate in SOTA - Portugal´s Day. As off the end of February, close to 70 Portuguese amateur radio operators have shown interest in both activating and chasing SOTA summits.
As per past events, this is not a contest but rather a way to promote the participation in the SOTA program in Portugal.

The event will take place between 09h00 and 18h30 UTC, on the 21st.

An electronic diploma will be provided to those who participate. It can be request to the above emails by sending their activation and/or chase logs, as well as images or videos of their activity.
For further details and more information, the organizers can be reached, via email, at diasotaCT@gmail.com or ctsotaday@gmail.com

Bad Weather hits Portugal well into Spring

Like most of Europe, Portugal´s traditional “sunny spring” has taken second place to a stubborn Winter that won´t go away.
A constant stream of low pressure fronts blowing in from the Atlantic have spread dozens of storms, mostly towards the north of the country, dumping record amounts of snow on hills starting as low as 800m ASL.
That´s something that Pedro, CT1DBS, and Joaquim, CT7AHW, have found this past March 25th, while trying to activate CT/BA-001, Montemuro.

From the parking spot, they immediately figured out that it wouldn’t be a “walk in the park”, when the vehicle thermometer indicated 0º C outside.
Up on top, the vegetation was frozen solid, and snow was spread all over the summit. To add “insult to injury”, a freezing fast wind wouldn’t let up. This is, after all, one of the many wind farms in this part of the country.

There is a silver lining, however. The stormfronts dumped enough water into the ground, putting and end to the drought that has affect Portugal in the last couple of years.
Besides being a boon for agriculture, it is also good news for the forest, since a prolonged wet season means lesser chances of dried out vegetation and ensuing forest fires. And that makes for a safer summertime SOTA activities. Fingers crossed!

This is an ongoing theme of my monthly reports – do folks just ignore what I write? I have a continued stream of inaccurate claims: missing qualification dates, wrong certificate ordered, incorrect email address and this month (quite honestly, beyond comprehension) two wrong claims for trophies.

In future if the wrong (or missing) information is on the order you will receive the order as placed or, if information is missing, the order will be cancelled. I spend enough time working on awards and do not have the time available to chase participants for the information which is required. The information is available from your database log, check it and make sure your claim is accurate, then double check your order to make sure what is on the order is what you require. I will always try to help if you are not certain what to claim, my contact details are on the website and on the shopping site.

SOTA will have a table at the Glasgow Rally at Braehead Stadium on 20 May; I will have a range of SOTA merchandise available but if you require something specific please contact me beforehand and I will bring it with me. This can save you the significant cost of postage

Please take care and be safe on the hills

NORTH AMERICAN REPORT from Skip K6DGW

Well, hello again from the Western Hemisphere! As you can see from the statistics below, things picked up smartly in April. I don’t recall having over 9,000 chaser QSO’s before … but then there are lots of things these days I don’t recall. Buried in those numbers is a noteworthy achievement: We had what I believe is the first activation in XE2-Mexico Norte’. XE2N activated XE2/AG-008 on 8 April. Among other chasers he may have worked whose reports are buried in what seems like terabytes of SOTA activity is a QSO with XE2AT on 2 m FM. The only reason I know this is that the statistics generator produces a hugely long detail file, and XE are the last associations before the summary statistics.

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS: Several this month

Tennessee has a new Mountain Goat – John, KJ4ZFK. Congratulations John!

Fred, KT5X [also known as WS0TA] reports that Mike, AD5A, has earned the first NM Iconic Peaks Award by a non-NM summiteer. Mike activated Wheeler Peak, Hermit, Taylor, Capulin, and Pedernal beginning in Sep 2015 and completing on 10 Apr 2018. Congratulations Mike!

Fred also called attention to the New Mexico Century Award for 100 chaser QSO’s with NM summit activations. So far, there have been four awards: NS7P, K6EL, W0MNA, and W0ERI. Now, Phil, NS7P, joins … well – no one … he’s the first to be awarded the NM Double Century Award!! Fred says he has at least 30 medallions on-hand in 4 different designs.

Ryan, WG4I, reported on the W4 Campout at Roan Mt. State Park [TN] where he joined the Herd along with Scott, KW4JM. Dean, K2JB, conjured up a large pot of his famous SOTA Chili and dutch oven cornbread for Friday dinner. Congratulations to our new goats and many thanks to Dave, AE9Q, for the photo.

2018 W4SOTA Campout Attendees

Bob, K0NR - W7M AM, reported that Lance, W7GI has joined the Society of SOTA Shack Sloths with 604 chaser points in April.

And finally, Phil, NS7P [yes, that Phil … again] worked his 5,000th unique summit as a chaser, thanks to Dean, K2JB, who made a quick QSY to 20 to bring it off.

NEWS, EVENTS, and HAPPENINGS:
From Elliott, K6EL, proof that the Second Law of Thermodynamics is wrong and there really is a free-lunch in the Universe, “Hold that date - Our sixth annual free SOTA lunch at Pacificon will be at 12:15 pm on October 20, 2018, again at the Marriott, San Ramon, California, hosted by K6EL. Details and RSVP’s later.”

From Jeffery, AA6XA: “Five of us gathered at the Cannery Cafe in Hayward for brunch and some great conversations about radio, SOTA, and hiking. In attendance were Rex KE6MT, Jeff AA6XA, Vic AB6SO, Alex KK6ZLY, and Alex’s YL Haley.”

“After enjoying our meal at this excellent eatery, we split up and headed to different mountains for some activations. KE6MT went to NC-191 and was forced into a VHF only activation after some red ants decided to invade (after he put up his HF antenna, of course). AA6XA went to NC-432 and had a pleasant activation in the shadow of a repeater without any ants (or ticks). AB6SO drove up to CC-072 with some new antennas to test. K6EL made the arduous trek up to NC-423 and got in some summit-to-summit action. KK6ZLY was not able to join in the activations this time. Tim AF6TF had other plans in the morning, but was able to get up to a summit in the afternoon.”

AA6XAA-Bay Area Luncheon_2018

[Ed. Note: Hayward is a city on the east side of San Francisco Bay, south of Oakland. Famous for a fault that is seismically active and may be the trigger to California’s “Big One,” it is in the center of a region with many summits, a number of them fairly easy access]

Bob, K0NR, reports that Steve, WG0AT, has rebuilt the Cafepress web page for Colorado 14er Event merchandise. You can find it at https://www.cafepress.com/mtngoatwear

John, VA7JBE sent a photo of an activation of Mt. Garibaldi, VE7/SL-009. Some summits are walk-ups, some are drive-ups, and some are ski-ups.

VA7JBE_Mt Garibaldi

K0NR provided a link https://youtu.be/iu9Zps4hQbg to a presentation on SOTA to a radio club which may be of value to those asked to do likewise for their club. I [K6DGW] also have a Powerpoint presentation from several years back given to the No. Calif. Contest Club. Possibly we should start a library of resources?

And to close, while not North America, I did receive an announcement of what I think may be the the first word from South America SOTA:

"Brazil will join the SOTA community for good… Tomorrow, April 19th, around 16UTC, PY2GTA/p, João Carlos Vieira, will activate PY2/SE-012. He will use 15 and 20m, SSB, CW and FT8. This is the first activation of Brazil and hopefully many more will follow. PY2 is the first association in Brazil association with 804 SOTA summits and 15 regions. Brazil is a huge country (200m inhabitants, 8 515 767 sq km and more than 32.856 amateur radio operators) which will add several thousands summits to the SOTA Program.

That’s it for this issue, thanks to all of my contributors. Summer is almost here … in the N. Hemisphere.

Czech tour – Phil G4OBK

I am in Czech Republic with Victor GI4ONL. We are doing 8 days SOTA in the western part off the country bordering Germany. Eva HB9FPM helped us in applying for Czech licences, so Victor is OK8VM and I am OK8CDX. We will be active on summits until 9th May using the 20, 30 and 40 metre bands.

SOTA Portugal – Paulo CT2IWW

Despite the unpleasant weather, close to 15 stations were setup on SOTA summits on April 21st, in observance of SOTA Portugal Day. Rain and wind were a constant presence on some of the activations but that didn’t hamper the will and high spirits of the activators.
Contacts were made on HV, VHF and SHF, with most of the activations occurring in the northern and central regions. A few of these stations operated all day long and sported multiple operators.
The original date for the event was April the 7th but the worsening of weather conditions on the eve, brought on by a cold front that spawned high winds, thunderstorms, rain and snow forced its postponement. However, for those stations that did brave the elements on that day (and a few did go up the hills) the organization of the SOTA Portugal Day extends the offer of a participation diploma.
The electronic diploma will be provided to those who participated, both on the 7th and 21st of April. It can be request to the above emails by sending their activation and/or chase logs, as well as images or videos of their activity.
For further details and more information, the organizers can be reached, via email, at diasotaCT@gmail.com or ctsotaday@gmail.com
Next May 12th and 13th Portuguese SOTA enthusiasts, activators and chasers will meet in Lisbon for the annual gathering. The fifth edition of this meeting will last two days, with the first one (12th) to take place at the ARVM club headquarters, in Moscavide. This day is reserved for a series of presentations. On Sunday, there will be a group activation on a yet to be determined summit, somewhere near Lisbon.

Welcome to the June 2018 edition of SOTA News.
Apologies again for the late publication of this edition. Not a lot to add this month; the Blackpool and Glasgow rallies provided an opportunity to meet with the SOTA community and I took the chance to have a quick chat with G3CWI and 2E0YYY who both had trade stands in Glasgow – I hope it was worth the long trip North.

Only one error in award applications this month and it was easily corrected. Accuracy definitely makes my life easier with more than 70 awards to handle in a month – and a significant number of merchandise orders too.

I managed a quick activation on the way to Glasgow – three S2S on 13cm and the summit qualified with a random 4m FM qso (I don’t know who was more surprised at that contact, GM4ODW or me; 4m can be rather quiet up here outside contests).

Please take care and be safe on the hills

the results of the 2018 ARRL Jan VHF contest. W7A put in a concerted effort in Arizona and had 13 activators who worked 600 QSO’s. Pete, WA7JTM, also pointed out: “This article really focuses on SOTA in a big way throughout the article, and illustrates how the Arizona SOTA group went all out for the contest, making it maybe the “busiest January Contest” ever here in Arizona. As the author states SOTA was a ‘Big Deal’ in this contest across the USA and especially here in Arizona. He begs for more of the same in future contests, as SOTA, VHF, hill topping, and VHF contests are a perfect fit. SOTA already is included in the QRPTTF event every year, so here are more opportunities for SOTA ops to get involved.”

With the ARRL Grid Chase this year and the fact that many summits are in rare grid squares that are mainly inaccessible to those in vehicles, SOTA activations can really make a VHF contest interesting.

John, VE3IPS provided a summary of his activation of VE3/SO-101 which you can read at

ve3ips.wordpress.com/2018/04/07/ve3-so-101-409m-2-points-sota-summit/.

Now, this is a 409 meter 2-point summit, but I include it in achievements because, looking back in the NA SOTA archives, I believe this is the first VE3 activation report we’ve ever had. Thanks John.

NEWS: I asked Ward, N0AX if he could enlighten the SOTA folks on several growing movements for increasing youth interest in ham radio and the many related things that were going to be on display at the Xenia Hamvention [aka “Dayton”]. He wrote this prior to the event, and its magnitude and breadth was both surprising and pleasing.

“There is an encouraging number of new initiatives, events, modes, and groups through ham radio today, all pushing the envelope in one way or another. I started calling this ‘Ham Radio 2.0’ a few years ago in the sense of new ways building from and on the old ones to make something different, yet fulfilling the Basis and Purpose. I don’t claim any ownership of the term - Jason, KC5HWB, has a dandy YouTube channel with the same name (https://www.youtube.com/user/kc5hwb) and there is a Facebook group with that name as well. It’s all good - lots of potential out there.”

“SOTA is one of those new HR2.0 groups. SOTA has been responsible for a lot of interest in QRP and portable operating, combined with interests in geography, outdoor activities, and physical fitness, plus using the internet to alert people of new activations and to discuss the results. This hybridization is a hallmark of innovation, whether technical, artistic, or cultural. It gives a new energy to amateur radio, brings in new people, and new ideas, too. The ‘OTA’ meme is also catching on - look for the long-active IOTA, plus YOTA, and NPOTA, for example - with the most important aspect being ‘on the air’ using our bands and privileges. What’s not to like?”

“In order to create a little synergy and help people make connections between groups and themes, the Yasme Foundation (yasme.org) decided to create a ‘2.0 Row’ area at the Hamvention to provide a gathering and socialization center. The ground-breaking HamSCI (hamsci.org) group was right next door, along with FIRST Robotics and the Hamvention’s Youth Tech area. HamSCI and HR2.0 decided to share a presentation schedule resulting in the list of talks published on the SOTA website. We were worried about having enough interest - now we’re worried about being overrun! That’s the right problem to have.” Thanks Ward!

Iceland [TF] is technically in Europe, but since close neighbor Greenland [OX] is technically in North America for amateur radio purposes, I picked this up from the Elecraft list from Yngvi, TF3Y:

“I thought some here might enjoy some photos from my first SOTA activation
using my brand new Elecraft KX2. This transceiver is absolutely brilliant
for SOTA! Mine has the built in ATU and used the built in Lithium battery
pack. The antenna was a 58’ LW held up using a 13.5’ fiberglass pole from
sotabeams.co.uk with a 12.8’ insultated counterpoise laying on ground.
Everything performed perfectly. The farthest QSO was with K6MW in WA.”

"Here is a link to the photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/qLDY9cT6tWZaAdzm9 "

and congratulations to Michael, K6MW, too, TF’s not a common prefix to work, and on a summit as well.

Vick, K7VK, reported for W7M:

"The snowline is rapidly receding in Montana and the 4 & 6-point summits are opening on their southern aspect. Taking advantage of that in May were Lance, W7GJ, Matt, KF7PXT, and Rob, AE7AP.

Recent Shack Sloth turned Activator W7GJ crossed a few snow drifts to activate his first summit, Blue Mountain W7M/LM-121. He is pioneering FT8 SOTA activations and has been successful on Six Meters and on HF. KF7PXT activated two summits braving the elements and reporting ‘horrendous bugs’ that shortened his activations. It must be time to carry that DEET and bug netting. AE7AP, Rob activated four summits climbing over the winter’s ‘downfall of trees’ and as in most areas of Montana carrying recommended bear spray along with his SOTA gear. As he hiked with his XYL Barb, AE7AQ, he spotted a snowshoe hare in the trail and exclaimed ‘Barb – there is a Hare – get in front of me’ (to take a photo). Barb heard ‘Bear’ – but didn’t hesitate! Now that’s an amazing XYL!

“K7VK, Vick avoided the snow and bugs by heading to Washington State activating three Washington and Oregon State-Forest summits. KI7WBJ, Charles had an even warmer weather experience activating a Georgia summit, Blood Mountain W4G/NG-004. Thanks Chasers!”

While I’m not sure how this found it’s way into my email inbox, it appears that Allan, operating as TI/K3LL activated the 8 point Cerro Barbacoas, TI/SJ-037 back in April. I’ll have to do some research on this, I was unaware we had a Costa Rica Association.

One last item in the ham radio youth department, on Sat, June 9, we will have K7RC on the air from the Nevada Space Center as part of a youth science and space exhibition. We’ll be operating W7RN remotely on SSB and we’re expecting a fair contingent of Scouts as well as other kids. I’ll monitor SOTAWatch looking for activations to contact. We’re not on a summit but feel free to call and give the kids a thrill if you hear us. I suspect most operation will be on either 15 [if open] and 20. W7RN has an S-zero noise level, 1500 watts, and a very high coefficient of aerial aluminum so we should be able to hear most everyone. The station is in DM09ei and Storey County NV if you need either. We’ll be on from about 1500 - 1930 UTC.

SOTA Portugal – Paulo CT2IWW

On may 12th, about two dozen SOTA enthusiasts gathered in Lisbon to attend the 5th SOTA Portugal’s annual meeting of activators and chasers.

The event was opened by Francisco Gonçalves, CT1DL, head of the ARVM club, who welcomed all participants to the meet that took place in that club’s headquarters.

Pedro Carvalho, CT1DBS, proceeded with a presentation of the SOTA program and was followed by Paulo Teixeira, CT2IWW, who made the balance for the previous year’s activity in Portugal. Despite an activation slowdown from 2016 (undoubtedly due to an abnormal fire season) , the program continues to follow the growing tendency registered since 2014.

The following demonstration was by Nuno Freitas, CT2IUV, who made a very informative presentation regarding proper clothing and individual protection gear for outdoors activities.

To close the morning proceedings, João Morgado, CT1BQH, made his case for the use of CW on SOTA activities. Mr. Morgado, who is currently the top chaser in Portugal, went into details on how to prepare and proceed with both activation and chasing operations using that mode.

After the lunch break, Pedro Carvalho took over the floor, making a thorough presentation on IT tools to use in support of activations, namely SOTA Maps, SOTA Database and the SOTAWATCH alert and spots page.

The talk schedule was rounded up by Emmanuel Lomba, CT7AFR, who made a very complete presentation on portable power and battery choices for the activator and /P activities in general.

After closing of the presentation schedule, the participants engaged in a general discussion of diverse matters regarding SOTA Portugal, namely the vacancy of the national Association Manager post. It was agreed, also, that the next yearly meeting will occur in the district of Santarém, as per offer by João Coelho, CT1BWU, who took on the responsibility for its organization.

As usual, the next day (Sunday, 13th) was reserved for group activation, which took place in Arrábida, CT/ES-003.

From Skip, K6DGW, NA reporter dude:

ARRL Field Day has come and gone. I know there were a few activations over the “non-contest event.” I’ve always figured that keeping score and publishing the scores makes it a game, and a radio contest is a game, but I hope the activations went well.

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

Phil, NS7P “The 24/7 Chaser,” reports that he has reached one hundred thousand (100,000) chaser points and is getting back on the summits now! I wonder if any of the SOTA Founding Dads ever considered anyone would reach that total?

Bob, AC1Z in Alton NH, broke through the 30,000 chaser points on a QSO with N3NNU on W4G/NG-040 [Sassafras Mt GA] on 16 June.

Fred, KT5X, reported: “The NM Double Century Award (for Chasers) is issued to Elliott, K6EL. Nice going! A hand-painted earthenware medallion will be on its way soon. Details on earning the NM Century Award, Double Century, Half Millennium, and Millennium Awards for Chasers, and the NM Iconic Peaks award for activators can be found on the QRZ.com page for WS0TA, along with recognition for award winners.”

Fred also pointed out that Mountain Goat W0CCA is [or was] in a “Natural Power Race” from Washington State to Alaska. I believe the vessels might be outrigger kayaks [see photo on his QRZ page], and I tracked him in “Swan Song” on tracker.r2ak.com for awhile. Nearly all the boats are gone from the site now. No word yet on how Cap did in the race.

NEWS:

From Ron, AE7P, reports for Montana, W7M: Montana saw 9 summits activated in June – a sure sign that summer is coming. Malen, VE6VID, crossed the border to activate W7M/FS-149 – Blacktail Mountain. The Missoula Crew – Vick-K7VK & Lance-W7GJ donned their umbrellas & activated a few summits, with Lance doing his thing with FT8! Vick then snuck across the Idaho border to activate a couple of summits in the remote upper Selway country. Rob, AE7AP, and Barb, AE7AQ, got out for a few activations, including W7M/CL-065 – Alice Mountains HP which burned during the 2017 Alice Creek fire, giving it good potential for Morrell mushrooms. After 11-miles, lots of great views, and a fine activation, Barb actually found a couple right by the car!

Pete, WA7JTM with Shadow, K9WOOF showed up in the email: “Pretty quiet out here in AZ this June, but I did have some fun on Six Meters that the SOTA ops may enjoy hearing about.”

“June 6th I drove up to the Grand Canyon National Park to set up my high power station for the ARRL June VHF Contest. I set up my camp in the National Park and then drove over to activate W7A/CN-013 (Grandview Benchmark). This summit is just out of the National Park it turns out. HF conditions were pretty good, but nothing was heard or worked on Six Meters. Well maybe my luck would be better tomorrow.”

“The next morning, Thursday June 7th, I loaded up the truck with my faithful pooch Shadow, and my SOTA gear, and went on the road again… this time to activate two hike up summits. On the first summit, W7A/CS-053, I managed to work two stations on Six Meter ES skip, one in Texas (EM13), and one in Idaho (DN13), both on CW with nice signals. Unfortunately the bugs were very hungry so I had to bail out early and head for the second summit, hopefully with less bugs.”

“The second peak was Red Butte, CN-019, about a 1.5 mile hike to the top. Once on top I found a nice shady tree for my dog and I, and no bugs, so I set up my Link Dipole and FT817 there. I went to 20 meters CW and worked a number of stations, but I noticed some very short skip on 20 meters, a sign that Six might be open, or the MUF was pretty high.”

“I QSY’ed to Six Meters and the band was wide open into Southern California. In the next 70 minutes I worked 21 stations in five Grid Squares all 5x9 on SSB in Southern Cal, four of them were “Mobile In Motion” stations. I worked them all with my dipole at 12 feet and my barefoot FT817, about 4 watts. Everyone said I was 5x9, and obviously they were even stronger to me. I had quite a pileup going as I was in DM35, a rarely worked grid in Southern California apparently.”

“I also managed to work one station in Louisiana (EM31), and another in Mississippi (EM52) for the longest 6M contacts of the day. The band was still open when my battery decided to call it quits about 2 PM. I have to admit that this opening was more fun than the VHF contest was on Saturday and Sunday! Anyhow, we had great fun hiking and working 6M DX that day…you never know about Six Meters…anything is possible, even when running QRP Portable.”

Thanks to Etienne, K7ATN, you can find all the news of the Pacific Northwest at:
www.pnwsota.org/sites/pnwsota.org/files/downloads/K7ATN/PNW%20SOTA%20Newsletter%20Jul-Aug%202018.pdf

Fred, KT5X, mentioned that New Mexico activity has been curtailed by several wildfires. In fact, the entire West is in extreme fire danger with major fires in Colorado, New Mexico, California, and some in Arizona, Utah, and even Oregon. Activating under difficult conditions is part of SOTA but please be very careful with your plans and expeditions.

EVENTS:

Jeff, AA6XA, and Rex, KE6MT, reminded me of a San Francisco Bay Ares SOTA Meet-Up:

When:
Saturday, 28 July 2018
9:30am to 12:00pm
(GMT-07:00) America/Los Angeles

Where:
Mr Pickles, 1014 Court St San Rafael, CA 94901

Description:
Our second SF Bay Area meetup. This time we will gather at Mr. Pickles in San Rafael for brunch, Saturday July 28 at 9:30am. Afterwards we can all head out to activate some of the beautiful Marin peaks nearby. There are lots of peaks in the area, ranging in difficulty from drive-up to very hard. If you’re an activator or chaser in the Bay Area, come join us for a great time.

Rex, KE6MT and Jeff, AA6XA are the organizers of this fun event.

And, from Bob, K0NR:

Colorado 14er Event
www.ham14er.org
August 4 & 5, 2018

Amateur Radio operators from around Colorado will be climbing many of Colorado’s 14,000-foot mountains and Summits On The Air (SOTA) peaks to set up amateur radio stations in an effort to communicate with other radio amateurs across the state and around the world. Join in on the fun during the 27th annual event and see how many of the mountaintop stations you can contact. The covers the entire weekend but many mountaintop activators will hit the trail early with the goal of being off the summits by noon due to lightning safety concerns.

Now including Summits On the Air (SOTA), which adds over 1700 potential summits! If you aren’t up to climbing a 14er, there are many other summits to choose from (with a wide range of difficulty). See the Colorado SOTA web page at w0c-sota.org

Radio operators who plan to activate a summit should post their intent on the ham14er Yahoo Group. To subscribe to the “ham14er” email list, visit the Yahoo groups site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ham14er/ . Also, be sure to check out the event information at http://www.ham14er.org It is also a great idea to post an ALERT on the SOTAwatch.org website.

REPORT OF THE MONTH:

From Scott, WB8ICQ: On Sunday, June 24, Bob,WK2Y, and I activated Siler Bald, W4C/WM-024. Nothing unique about that, it’s not particularly high (1591m) nor difficult to access (about 1.7 miles along the Appalachian Trail from the Wayah Gap parking lot to a side trail, then about 0.2 mi up a steep side trail to the summit), and this was the 14th activation. What made it notable was 1) this was Bob’s first-ever exposure to SOTA, and 2) it was the second day of Field Day. We had spent Saturday trying to operate FD from a cabin in a North Georgia mountain valley using our SOTA rigs (Bob’s KX3 and my KX1), and we found the combination of QRP, expedient antennas, and low QTH made it impossible. We were lucky to get one QSO every 30 minutes."

“I was a bit uncertain about trying SOTA the next day, wondering if we would be swamped by Field Day QRM, but we gave it a go anyway. We found that the panoramic summit made up for the QRP, and when I found a clear frequency and posted to SOTAwatch, the game was afoot! I worked all regions of the US and into the Canadian maritimes on 14 and 7 mHz CW. Meanwhile Bob finally got into the Field Day game on SSB. And it was a perfect day for late June, with cloud cover providing a break from the sun and usual Southern summer’s scorching temperatures. The moral of the story: don’t be afraid to try SOTA even during the busiest contests – if you build it, they (the chasers) will come!”

That’s it From the New World for this month. No word from the XE Associations or OX this time.

Well, here we are at the end of July already. Temperatures in Northern Nevada are hovering in the 38 C [100 F] range which is quite normal. W7RN now has two remotes, one with a KPA1500, so I intend to get back into the chasing game after a long absence. On to the news from the New World …

STATISTICS: The statistics for July look a lot more like they should. I removed June’s data since the numbers were very small and obviously wrong. I am suspicious of the 3 VLF QSO’s, and 12 1240 MHz also seem like a lot, but that’s what came down from the Internet and you know it’s illegal to put anything on the Internet that isn’t true. If whoever posted VLF QSO’s would enlighten me, it will likely be of interest to others. [

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS: We have several to report this month:

Bob, AC1Z, in Alton, NH reports that he reached 30,000 Chaser points on June 16, 2018 contacting N3NNU on Sassafras Mountain, W4G/NG-040.

John, N0TA, noted that George, KX0R, passed 10,000 S2S points and is the current North American S2S leader.

Steve, WG0AT, advised that, if Mt. Evans was climbable on 10 Jul, George, KX0R also will make 4 time Mountain Goat at 4001 points. Word that he succeeded has yet to reach Sparks here on the western frontier, but even if he didn’t, he’s awfully close.

From Brad, WA6MM, comes news that Ryan, K7ODX, just became the first W7U Mountain Goat activating 134 peaks, all but 2 of which were in Utah.

And in New Mexico news, Fred, KT5X, reports that Paula, K9IR, is the 6th chaser to make 100 QSO’s with activators on W5N SOTA peaks since 1 Feb 2018 and earns a NM Century Medallion. Martha, W0ERI, and Gary, W0MNA, have each achieved 200 chaser QSO’s with NM SOTA activations and have earned Double Century Medallions. Fred mentioned that he has medallions for 100, 200, 500, and 1000 QSO’s and that he has plenty of the medallions.

Claiming one of those 500 QSO medallions is Phil, NS7P. Fred commented, “Over the last two months Phil has become ‘Mr. Johnny-on-the-spot’ for every NM activation. He is usually the first to snag me on each band, and gets through even when the conditions are punk.”

Congratulations to all!! I think this is the largest Awards and Achievements we’ve ever had.

EYEBALL SOTA: July saw several in-person gatherings or annoucements of plans for them:

Jeff, AA6XA, reported: “For the second Bay Area Meetup, we met at Mr. Pickles in San Rafael (not a breakfast place but good sandwiches). Despite some parking difficulties due to a bike race, six of us were able to attend. We had a slightly different group this time: Rex, KE6MT; Jeff, AA6XA; Dmitry, N6DNM; Austin, K6ABM; Elliot, K6EL; and Joe, AA0BV. We enjoyed our sandwiches on the plaza and discussed all things radio. Afterward, a few of us were able to go up some nearby mountains.”

“K6ABM hiked up San Pedro Mountain, KE6MT went up Vollmer Peak, and AA6AA hiked up Pine Mountain. Eventually we all managed S2S contacts on 2 meters. K6ABM and AA6XA had more time and both worked chasers on HF.”

Everyone had fun, and it was a beautiful afternoon for activating afterward. Keep an eye on the NA SOTA list for the announcement of the next meet-up. Hope you’ll be able to join us!"

Fred, KT5X [aka WS0TA], provided the following: “The Duke City Hamfest will also serve as the Rocky Mountain Division meeting this year. It will be held Sept 21-23 at the Isleta Pueblo Casino, south of Albuquerque, NM.”

“There will be a SOTA presentation at the convention which will feature activators representing possibly 25% of all activations yet done in North America. Activators and Chasers from all over the country are invited to be part of this group of enthusiasts! When the date gets close and we know who is coming we will certainly organize some appropriate gatherings, on top of peaks, or at esoteric watering holes such as the Mine Shaft Bar and Grill.”

“Think of this as your invitation to have some more fun meeting some of your compadres and doing some NM SOTA peaks. You might activate Sandia Peak, nearly 11,000 feet high, by riding this tram up the face of the mountain!” http://sandiapeak.com/ “Looking forward to meeting you.”

Joe, N0MAP" sent the invitation for the Midwest gathering: “We decided to meet at Ft. Wilkins SP on MI’s Upper Peninsula Sept 8-9. There are still a bunch of sites available (surprisingly). There are a range of summits relatively nearby, from drive-ups to longer hikes. There are places to eat/meet within walking distance (including a brewery!). My plan is to arrive around noon on the 7th and maybe get an activation in. I’m booked in site 161.”

Finally, Jamie, N6JFD, has set up a breakfast meet for the Tahoe-Reno-Sparks area:
"So, lets shoot for August 11th, Saturday at Big Ed’s Alley Inn in Downtown Reno: 9am - whenever. https://www.yelp.com/biz/big-eds-alley-inn-reno

“It’s a neat looking place, I called and they can handle a group up to 10 folks. (And it’s not in a strip mall). Please let me know the level of interest and I’ll get us reserved for that morning. Looking forward to meeting some of our local SOTA folks.”

Jamie’s email is jfdahl {at} gmail {dot} com

No reports this month but Jody, K3JZD, reported that his phone, when close to his KX3, put all kinds of noise into the radio. It appears that he has a GSM phone and several knowledgeable folk mentioned that it’s called “GSM buzz.” Do not adjust your set!
